If the scheme motivates people to generate savings this is good. But ultimately prosperity comes from generating income and not by opening zero balance accounts that adds more to stationery cost of banks. There are many who have too little income to save. I wonder how the bank account wil benefit them.

Going to basics is the best way of promoting a saving habit in people.I remember when I was a studen we wer given small piggy banks into which we put coins and small change and a bank rep ( SBI) came to cllect the amount ob=nce a month and deposit it into SB accounts. It gave you self satisfaction and a sense of financial independance. Modi realises the importance of saving and its contribution to the economy, so he is bringing in these reforms which will have long term impact ..

Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!

On the whole it appears that the scheme wil ncrease cost of banks with no real benefits to ecnomy or people. People need job, income and savings first. On the first day of oening bank accounts, many enthusiasts even lured the tea shop boys and shoe plish boys t open accounts. But it is obvious that they will not maitain the accounts.

Jan Dhan Yojana scheme is really an innovative idea for the development of our country. This was a scheme introduced by BJP goveernment in Modi's period (2014)

This is indeed a good initiative..at least slowly poor people who are exploited in the hands of sahookars for loan amount for which they end up paying and repaying their debt for life will come to a halt. Only if such poor people get more employment opportunities and can save some amount however small it may be..then even banks and Indian economy can be benefited.

“A mistake is a crash-course in learning” – Billy Anderson

It is a good initiative by the Government but as mentioned by other members the real benefits will come only when saving practise is promoted among the account holders. The practise of Saving regularly( however small amount it be) should be promoted.
Jan Dhan scheme all the way a people friendly scheme to inculcate the habit of thrift, which is absolutely needed to achieve self reliance. Contrary to the belief that a scheme should generate employment opportunities, it's the starting point for future employment generation by the members who will get initial starting capital through different schemes.
Yes I agree with you. Normally, poor people suffering to open bank accounts due to some people are not literate. But now an account in bank is possible for them. Women is the real saving person in the family. Now they have the chance of putting their money in savings account in banks.
Jan Dhan opens food gates to many welfare measures which pave the way for Self reliance and opening of the employment opportunities.in future.

I find that you have made a sensible point viz. 'only if such poor pople get more employment opportuities...." Without employment, income and saving, bank account is mere gimmick, publicity stunt and waste of public money in form of cost of stationery and man power employed as well as computer disk space occupied.
