    This is probably the first time in the history of Catholic church that such a thing has happened...one of the reasons given was the failure by the church to root out child abuse by the priests .He has been very controversial in his views..

    A pope can resign if he wishes to. In this respect, the Canon law says "If it should happen that the Roman Pontiff resigns his office, it is required for validity that he makes the resignation freely and that it be duly manifested, but not that it be accepted by anyone."

    I did go through the link....I see that quite a few have resigned but not in the recent past...This is happening after 700 years....
