Millions of telecom subscribers (mobile and landline) will finally get relief from unwanted calls and SMSes from September 27. All those subscribers who have registered with the National Customer Preference Registry (earlier known as 'Do Not Call Registry') will be protected from all commercial communications, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said. (Read: How to block telemarketing SMS/calls)

TRAI had last year recommended a maximum fine of Rs. 2.5 lakh on telemarketing companies for making unsolicited calls or SMSes to a consumer registered under the NCPR - a modified version of TRAI's 'Do Not Call Registry' list.

To stop receiving telemarketing calls or SMSes, you can dial 1909 or send an SMS to 1909. For details, log onto www.nccptrai.gov.in and click on "How to register" under the tab that says "Information for customers."

If you receive telemarketing calls or SMSes a week after you've registered, you can complain to your phone company. You'll need to give the phone number from which the unsolicited commercial communication, as well as the date, time and brief description of the service being peddled. You can also visit www.nccptrai.gov.in and click on the "How to register complaint" under the tab that says "Information for customers." You are entitled to receive a response on your complaint within seven days.

You can cancel your registration after three months.

Telecom policies ban telemarketing (Voice Call or SMS) between 9.00 pm to 9.00 am.

This is really good information shared by Sandeep and I think this will at least give a sigh of relief to the subscribers from unwanted calls and SMSes. Apart from this the time ban from 9 pm to 9 am is also very good...!
