CHENNAI: Following complaints from across the state, the transport department told all vehicle owners to replace fancy registration number plates with regular ones. If number plates are notchanged by August 31 within the 30-day deadline, the vehicle's registration certificate will be suspended.

The dimension for number plates according to transport department rules is 100mm by 200mm for two-wheelers and 45mm by 285mm or 500mm by 120mm for four-wheelers. "Deviation from these dimensions is an offense. Most numberplate makers are aware of these dimensions, so it should not be difficult for the vehicle owners," said transport commissioner S Murugaia. The fine for a defective number plate is currently Rs 50 but there are plans to increase it.

This is commendable. Fancy number plates are just a nuisance and indicate idiocy of owners of such plates.

Very good move on the part of Tamil Nadu administration! Such offensive exhibition is rightly prohibited.
