Bharat Ratna is highest award. The awards like Padma Shree and Padma Vibhushan are lower but akin to Bharata Ratna. If sports persons can get these lower awards, they should also not be debarred from Bharat Ratna in case of exceptional achievement. If necessary, rules should be modified.

Om Puri has commented that sports persons do not deserve Bharat Ratna as their achievements are personal and of no social significance.

His view would have some merit if the award were only for Science, Economics, social work or world peace. Sports career is akin to entertainment industry. Film singers achievement is also personal like Cricketer. Lata Mangeshkar also got Bharat Ratna. Singing is as much personal achievement as sports.

Om Puri's statement hasno merit. Sachin Tendulkar definitely deserves Bharat Ratna. Rules should be amended and he be given the highest award.
