Tobacco major ITC and Godfrey Phillips India (GPI) have suspended their production nationwide from December 1 to protest the recent order by the Centre for health warnings on cigarette and beedi packets.

The tobacco manufacturers have stopped production of cigarette after uncertainty over pictorial warnings. The Government will lose nearly Rs 100 crore in excise daily. New pictorial warning was to come into effect on December 1, 2010.

Yes this is a temporary measure and looking at the loss of the excise duty by the state government it is but obvious that state Govt will be interested in taking steps to starting the prodn facilities as soon as possible.

There is huge loss of excise duty because to halting the production of cigarette
Jayen. Central Excise duty om cigarettes is collected by customs & Central Excise Department of Govt. of India. This is a central govt. tax.

Cigarette smoking is definitely injurious to health. Deadly disease 'Cancer' is attributable to cigarette smoking. If the cigarette companies permanently close business, this will be good for all. As regards employees in these companies, it will be best that these companies switch to some other product and absorb the employees there.
