It has been observed in a court decision that religion is a personal matter and there should be no public exposure of any one's religion. See the link:

However, there is a doubt. Religion is not so personal after all, Many concessions depend on religion. A scheduled caste will lose benefit on change of religion from Hindu. The facility of Hindu undivided family status and artificial juridical persons in shape of Hindu gods is available only to Hindus in corporate and tax laws. there are also separate property law for each community.

The scheduled caste employees are required to certify every year that they have not changed religion from Hindu. I may add that Buddhism is considered a part of Hinduism.

As far as my knowledge goes, all people belonging to the OBC, SC/ST, Backward Classes etc. get all kinds of benefits irrespective of their respective religions! At least I have seen people both Hindu as well as Christians getting such benefits!

But there is a difference in cut off marks for the government held examinations based on the so called categories.

I do not know about Kerala Govt. rules. In central govt service, if some one changes religion to Islam or Christianity, he loses benefits. Also, many change religion but do not disclose this in writing to the employer organization. Unless some one makes complaint or the employee himself tells the fact of conversion, he will continue to get the benefit.

The Christians get benefit as scheduled Tribes but not as scheduled castes.

Yes, religion is personal and it is gods gift, so it should not be changed.

Well nothing is personal now-a-days...not even religion.. :)
Many people try to change religions if they are provided with some funds and other facilities. :( :(
