I think marketing is the process of advertising and related processes that contribute to the actual goal of sales.

Sales is the final transaction of exchanging the product to customers for cash or other monetary items.
Anusha- The difference between marketing and selling well explained. Sales function supposes that there is already demand. Sale is nothing but transaction. Marketing is of new product launched or of a new brand of existing market. Marketing includes research, sample marketing in selected areas, research on consumer habits and needs etc. marketing includes sale. Thus marketing is a wider term than selling.
