Karva Chouth is a festival which is observed by women mostly in Northern India. Women pray for the long life of the Husband. Though there are no such celebrations and festivals like Karva chouth, some festivals like Varalakshmi Vratam celebrated by women in AP, Tamil Nadu , Telengana and Karnataka.
People in different parts of the country celebrate festivals according to their beliefs. Here fast is done in different parts of country, and the festival is celebrated with different names. As you said Varalakshi Vratam is celebrated in AP, Tamil Nadu, and other parts. I think the theme is same but the name is different.

Yes the themes of the festivals of Varalaksmi Vratam and such festivals exclusively performed by women are same. That is Husband's welfare. May be some variations depending on the region.

The new link says about when the festival Karwa chouth falls. It falls in the month of Kartik according to Amanta calendar . It's a new information for us in AP. Anyhow, we in AP do not observe Karwa Chouth as I said earlier.

It is not enough that you are loving one, you must be apparently it. Karwa chouth is also one means of expressing that I love you. It is my opinion that in which direction we are living, is not important, we are all Indian so must be enjoyed all festivals of India.

Thanks a lot for the link ...I wonder if they have any similar fasting day where husbands fast for the welfare of their wives ?

Thanks @usha manohar for asking this question and it has no reply but a new trend is beginning and that is many young husbands are keeping fast on that day which is quite a good sign. Bengalis also do not have this festival. I first learnt about this festival from Hindi films and now in Delhi I get to see married women celebrating the festival. Ladies very keenly dress up on this day.

I too know about this festival through hindi films where it is romanticised ..In a film called Shaan, which was shown recently on the TV, the wife played by Rakhee is getting ready to celebrate the festival with her husband ( Sunil Dutt) and hears the news that he has been killed...This is a blog written by twinkle Khanna on Karva Chaut ,who incidentally has become a very humorous writer..
