I read this. Pity we are unable to get rid of colonial stink.

Almost all private clubs have dress codes but they also include Indian dresses like Kurta Pyjama for men but some may not do so...However, it is time they changed this rule to suit the Indian lifestyle since the clubs are functioning here and should cater to the popular taste and lifestyle rather than hold on to old traditions which was anyway done forcibly !

Restrictions on dress imposed in the Indian clubs is ridiculous. If these clubs dishonor  Indian culture and the traditional dresses they are going to lose members over a period. Even noted Indian painter MF Hussain was subjected to this humiliation. After this shameful incident the club removed all the dress restrictions.

Yes, its seems that though we drove the British rulers out of our country we do seem to carry the British culture in our hearts and psyche.

That goes to show how much we respect our own culture. While we try to show them off our dress and culture in our international fashion shows but within the country we are in two minds about it.

However, we need to ask ourselves a question - do we go to work everyday wearing Indian styled clothes or Western styled clothes. We as a people have changed in many ways  from what is culturally ours to what is comfortably ours.

We go to work with a uniform prescribed by the management of the organization. This dress code made mandatory keeping the work place hazards in view. Here safety of the individual is important Not the culture. If a workman works in a factory wearing loose hanging traditional dress like Sherwani, he's bound to become a victim of a fatal accident. if i go to a recreation club to play Tennis in my factory uniform, you are likely to fall down.

Wisdom lies in striking a balance between the suitable conditions and unsuitable conditions.

Although it looks ridiculous but clubs are collection of persons who like its policies. Outsiders should not bother. A club can prescribe its dress code.Take it or leave it.

That is a valid point that you are make here.  A club has  a defined group with a defined set of activities and it may have a dress code suited to its activities.  Follow it or leave it .. the choice is left to the individual concerned.

There are different clubs for different purposes. Most of these clubs are Recreational clubs.They range from Gambling to family meets and sports etc. What is the idea behind a dress code for a gambling Club. What is the Idea behind fixing a dress code for Get together ?

Here, in my place there is a club called Waltair Club established during British Rule. Now, in tune with the present days waived off all the dress code system.

Dress code is observed during get-together in most clubs or else they have casual wears..However, we cannot question them, all that can be done is to extend the dress code to include traditional Indian wears along with the formal suit and tie ! But what is offensive is barring Indians from entering certain clubs and resorts.We had one here at Om beach in Gokarna where a private club run by an expat Britisher was not open to all Indians ( except on invitation)  but all foreigners were free to visit it .There were many protests after which there have been some changes

In the present scenario, the procedure of imposing Dress code in clubs is meaningless.  Of course for industrial organizations and educational institutes are necessary. THE FORMER one for safety purposes and for the later for Uniformity for establishing the fact " Equality"
