How can women who happen to come late to home, protect themselves?

providing them a phone number will help but it would not be a guarantee that it will help their cause. Why not all commuters play the role of police in such cases? I would prefer to see people coming forward and help the women in trouble. Once the goondas know they're in trouble they will forget their bad habits immediately. 

I think up to 10 PM most of the people returning home so there is a security for women in trains. women should avoid travelling in the ladies coach where there is merely one or two persons. If possible husband can bring her home safely or he can make a call to her and get to know about the status. Most of the companies providing cab facilities for the women who are working in late shifts.

Best practice is to travel along with a male colleague in case a female employee is travelling by a cab. To match US timings working hours begin from 11am and run till 8 pm. Public should come forward in case of any trouble, also a system should be implemented where in, when a female employee reaches her home safely the office in which she works are notified. Although workplaces cannot be held responsible for security of women but at least if anything goes wrong offices will be notified. This can go a long way to ensure women safety working and reaching home at late hours.

Yes, it is also the duty of the co-passengers to immediately come to someone's rescue.  But what happened at Rohtak, to say the least, was highly disturbing.  Even during day time, none of the passengers helped. 

This is probably why a better solution may be one that is based on advanced IT.

In Rohtak, the girls were more aggressive. Rather the boys were victims. The girls belted the youth just on seat allotment rto an old lady. In iew of contrary facts coming to light, Haryana Government has reinstated the Bus staff who were suspended earlier and also put off honoring the 'brave girls' on republic day.  There is no reason why passengers should helped these aggressive and quarelsome girls.   

Sorry.  I did not read the news properly.  If this is actually the case, then the girls should be punished.  However, do not such incidents happen so often, and do our women not need help?

We need to discuss each and every solution, like for example, a cctv in each bus.  Of course, whether this is easily possible, is something that needs to be debated.  Let us not jump to any conclusion, based on one incident.

I don't think it's possible to depute a male with every working woman to protect her. If that was the case it would be better for such ladies to resign from the jobs. The practical solution is the co passengers help them and women learn themselves to protect.

If we see practically most female and male employee travel using their personal car or scooters or bikes. In few other cases, mostly employees take the buses offered by the company, which is nothing but safe. But only in few instances many companies do not provide company buses and run late, in such cases it is indeed the duty of the company and the manager in-charge for the dropping the female colleague with safety if not at least arrange for a cab/ office bus with a guard to drop them to their home. Many IT giants have been doing it. also, just because women safety is under constant threat, should every working women be forced to quit and sit back at home.

Moreover, the police patrol should be increased around all vulnerable areas any time after 10PM.  If the citizens can also help the police in some way or the other, it can help a great deal.  For example, there are quite a number of men, who have the freedom of working during the day, only for a specific period of time.  Such men can be reached out for helping the police. 

If someone comes out with some innovation, whereby the woman can easily alert the police and others nearby through some easy method, it will be fine.  For example, if the mobile phone has a facility, whereby merely pressing zero after 10PM, alerts the police station people nearby, it will be of great help.

Some IT wiz kids have to get into the act and devise a solution.

I read some IT boy devised asystem that can save the women from such atrocities. If it  comes to the market, and accessible to all common people, it helps a lot for the working women who work in late hours.
