Indian railways have a long history of various classes of accommodation. Now Third class is eliminated. Once Gandhi ji was asked why he always traveled by third class to which he wittingly replied that because there is no fourth class. Now First class is also mostly eliminated. The current accommodation is explained in the link:

Thanks for providing the link. This will really help new users of IRCTC website to book railway tickets. I usually travel in sleeper coaches for long travels. But I wish to try other coaches of train also.

I used to travel with my parents also as my father was in transferable govt. job. I traveled in First Class, second class, third class and Inter class. Now there is no third and inter class. I was told that the First class soon after independence was just 'second class' during British period and the 'First Class' usually used by British was very excellent. There was only First class A.C. whereas now we have A.C. two tier, three tier and chair car as well.

I travelled in all the said classes of the then railways. And now the changed classes. The common binding factor of all the classes then and now are the same cockroaches and bed bugs.

First class and AC first class is using by government employees who need not to pay out of their pocket. Common person prefer AC 2 tire or 3 tire.

Even the general coaches of second class are worse than previous 3 class now. They have also withdrawn II class which was aailable until seventies and as comfortable. They have withdrawn sleeper cum sitting class which was available for 1 rupee, that was upeer birth of all general 3 class. Now they are more after making money with innovating ideas. Yes first class is use less and AC I is too costly and that too mostly unavailable because high government officials and politician get all the quota available. I have traveled in AC 1 just once that too because my AC2 ticket was automatically upgraded to ACI while traveling to Bhubneswar from Hyderabad.
