Well can mean anything opportunistic, sycophancy , what is actually needed is being fair to everyone and doing what your conscience dictates , in which case there is very little to worry.
Pay no mind to those who talk behind your back, it simply means that you are two steps ahead !!!
Yes good nature is not dependent on any of these factors and is completely based on attitude to respect others. I feel that sometimes people don't understand this fact.
