To save as much heat as it can, the crane stands on only one leg and tucks the other one up against its body. Most birds rest their breast on the ground or a tree branch and tuck their wing when they sleep. Cranes and some other water birds often sleep standing in water. They stand on only one leg so that they can reduce loss of body heat as much as possible. Cranes can even stand on one leg all night and it doesn't bother falling down.
