It is a grave mistake to theorize before one has data.

In social sciences like Economics, there are two methods of research. One is inductive method, which employs logic. another is inductive that uses data. The combination of both gives best results. Data by itself cannot prove or disprove anything. The cause and effect relation has to be established before arriving at a conclusion. For example, I got fever when my friend visited me. Now there are two facts. My fever and my friend's arrival. If I see only data without applying mind, i may say that my friend's arrival is cause of fever. This is not true as there is no causal relations between these. Most of the superstitious beliefs are based on arriving at conclusions on certain data without examining cause and effect relations between them.
