What else can you expect for such a 'heinous' crime, if not jail and lashing?
But the court is lenient. He had only asked for ending influence of religion. The allegation was that he totally renounced religion. But the court did not accept the major allegation which would subject him to death. Hence he was punished for lesser offence and not given death sentence.

Although your observation is hundred percent correct but that is bread and butter of leaders, so called social activist etc. But in this case the matter relates to a different community and the result is bit surprising. A 'big sinner' spared very moderately.

Secularism is not praising or criticizing any religion. Secularism means not mixing religion with duty- particularly government job. So even if you are a very staunch Hindu and daily worship, you will be considered secular if you are religion neutral in your job and official work.
