It is possibly our intuition and also depending on the expressions seen on others that we show our own emotions of fear,disgust etc...If researchers have found this, I am sure that they have a valid reason for it , however it may come out only during extreme cases

Whenever we did any mistake we fear for that.Sometimes we just escape from the hands of others but many people are there around us by seeing those faces we feel fear of being caught.The expression of their faces show that they could say some thing to us.

Forth coming danger is very well identified by the animals. Their sense will more active then us. Humans have presence of mind and a sixth sense which can make them realise the coming danger or happenings.
