This is not a fake picture, I believe so. Generally, National Geographic doesn't publish fake pictures.
This picture was taken at Nakuru National Park in Kenya, a brief about the photograph and name of the photographer is mentioned below the picture in the link.

All the lions are having the beware of something they saw some thing down so that they jumped on to the trees
