It is indeed very shocking. It is not only unsafe but also affects the dignity of the manual scavengers. Though the Government put lots of Efforts in constructing toilets, cleaning of sewars and septic tanks are still mostly dependent on manual scavengers. Hope the efforts by engineers of Kerala to develop robots to clean them will bear result soon.

@jabeen hope so it happens soon otherwise the number of scavengers dying will get increase only. Its very unsafe as there is abundant of methane and hydrogen sulphide which is explosive so people should take care they don't lit matchstick or anything which may cause an accident.

sewarge system can remove this evil. In my city for open sewarage M.C. is using human. JCB machines are also used here. For safety tank here we  use pump system. Government must be took step for safety of scavengers.

It is truly very tough for scavengers and they are paid very little money for the job they do. They should be given good salary and respect. Sewerage system should be modified. In some parts of Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra so many people die due to open sewerage. In rainy season the sewerage gets filled with dirty water and if someone steps on it he can die because there is no cover. Why doesn't government do something in this ? This is the bare minimum thing which should be done and they talk of bullet train in India. Once we have proper hygiene and safety of life then government should think of bullet train and Mars mission. 

It is sad but true. There have to be strict measures taken around the safety of people working in hazardous environments and working conditions.

It is really distressing and pathetic and those poor people do anything for earning a living . You get to see media reports that it will be stopped but so far that has not happened. At least in my city I see them putting on plastic suit covering their entire body and head ... Something has to be done to put an end to this practice .

cover less sewerage is problem of every city including mine. Government is not sincere for it. Bureaucrat know that if some died, government will pay compensation and they have no liability for it. Situation can be improved when bureaucrats with be consider guilty.  

Government in India is very careless for the health of its citizens. People working in plastic recycle industry, coal industry and sanitation industry work in so hazardous condition that they catch so many diseases. Government should give the good medical facilities to the people who are cleaning the mess created by public.

It is wrong to accuse the Government about being negligent of the health of the citizens. As far as I know, Government has been launching various schemes related to easy access of medical assistance. 

But I do agree with your view that more efforts need to be made regarding the safety of those working in hazardous environment.

Can't say it is shocking.  It is a huge crime against fellow citizens. We have ao many expendable peoples that no one care about except their family .No media will write about them or take their plight into digital media because of the taboo and low star value associated with the manual scavengers  It is high time to stop using humans for these kind of jobs and use robotic aid.
