Depression in Intermediate & College days are becoming more & more common & we are finding classes seperately for this in different colleges. What do you think is the best way to deal with depression? How can one come out of it at the earliest by own or with help? How can one be with the person during this time?

Depression is not limited to college going students. Nowadays its common to find it even among the adults and elderly people. I feel that the best way for dealing with it is by sharing the problems with the near and dear ones. Let them know how you feel about certain situations that lead to depressions. But family and friends too need to be very supportive during this stage. They need to be very patient in dealing with depressed people.

Person's suffering from depression should be invariably taken to a psychologist for sure treatment.

I have heard this many times, but are psychologists good enough to treat them? I am not aware of any incidents of these kind where a person is taken to psychologist & the person getting alright, do you have any idea how it works & whether it is fruitful?

I agree. It is a very uncertain period & one needs patience with working around with these people. But to learn a lesson from such depression stage is very important for it to not recur again & again I feel..

I feel the family needs to be very understanding. The depressed people become introvert due to which they keep a safe distance from everyone at every point of time which leads to some callous action from his/her end. This is when the depressed people are wrongly judged and get accused by the family. This has to stop. The family must give time and stop nagging. More love and affection should be showered upon them and take them into confidence. This will help the person to open up and discuss his/her problem. Naturally, the doors will open up for further discussion and which will help to make the depressed person understand the life quite well. Gradually, problems will get sorted out, the person will have a strong will power and thus, depression will take a back seat.

Psychologist are a specialist in understanding human mind. They are the best person to diagnose the mental illness and treat them. They can understand better the real cause for depression. The family members can support the treatment process with constant love and care and showing patience. As Shampa had mentioned, the family members should also avoid nagging about matters that cause depression.

This sort of counseling is very fruitful. Don't even doubt about it. A long period of counseling sessions will determine the root cause of depression. When the counselor will determine the cause, he will start healing the wound and person will thereby slowly come out of his depression.

Depression is caused by many reasons , it could be genetic, prolonged illness or physical abuse. So unless one goes to the root of the problem it may be difficult to cure

Depression is not a physical condition which can be cured by drugs. It takes its own time to get cured and thus it can be a lengthy procedure. Earlier it was rare and was usually seen affecting individuals who are aged. Today, even undergraduates and those in school can be seen affected by it. The reason is simple. Too much stress and turbulence created in mind due to everything that is going around. Check for early signs as early detection is easy to cure.

It is known to many that Deepika Padukone went into depression. She too met psychologist and attended counselling sessions. She had recovered from it.

Yoga is best medicine to come out from depression and daily exercise also help but try to resolve reason of depression to come out fully

First of all a person suffering from.depreddion which can be clinical or psychological is unable to help themselves ... Yoga and meditation do help but with proper guidance and counseling .

True...sometimes depression is just a result of some other major ailment or even something as trivial as iron deficiency. So it is better to also seek professional help in addition to exercise or yoga.

Depression makes a person feel helpless. It is not something that gets treated on its own. The first rule is to reach out for help and support. Eating a healthy diet, following a mildly intense exercise regime and getting rid of negative thinking are some of the tips which will help greatly. When a change in lifestyle does not help then only option left will be to seek professional help.

Depression is the worst thing to face, failures & success are part of life, but going into depression only worsens the matter. One needs to experience both success & failure from childhood in any manner, at home or at school so that the child is nurtured with an ability to be balanced & have an attitude of challenging nature.

Unfortunately, depression is a complicated disorder. Sometimes, people may suffer from depression of reasons other than those related with the success and failures in life.

I agree that depression is a much more complicated issue and not just related to success and failures in life. It negatively affects the feelings of an individual. People who have low esteem, too much exposure to violence can also result in depression. Sometimes, it is seen to be running in families more like a hereditary trait.

Clinical psychologist is a good option but a common man cannot afford to get treatment from a clinical psychologist since they have huge consultation fees.

To talk to your Friends or your siblings who understand you can help to deal with depression.
