Brain Drain - Should we feel proud or ashamed

Brain drain - the emigration of highly trained or intelligent people from a particular country.

We know a lot of students who graduate from the top engineering and mba colleges (like IIT and IIM) seek jobs outside the country. They are offered best in class salaries and also the very best in terms of training, technology etc. On their personal front they can grow and achieve much in life but from the point of view of India as a country, our premium and best talents are being utilized by others. Many big names have Indians at the top.

List of 10 Indian CEOs leading some very famous brands.

So should we feel proud of their achievement or should we feel ashamed that India could not make use of their talents?

Liberty to  choose an avenue or a place for enhancing one's knowledge and Skills is not bad. Going  abroad to earn a Degree of his choice and such Coarse is not available in India, is not an act of disloyalty to the Country.

If persons who fitted like a cog in a wheel abroad where to stay back perhaps they too would have reached high peaks in their careers but in other fields. Why Indians ae expected to rejoice and feel proud of Indians who left the country when they were nobody purely for selfish reasons . We should be proud of persons who stayed in India and have contributed in its progress. The maximum dollars are being sent to India by Indians working in West Asia and not by brainy Indians.

It's only when people with brain leave that it leads to drain.... We have lakhs if indians working as labours in UAE...that does not constitute a brain drain. It's when the intellectuals leave the country... They do research and may be get patents also, these would have belonged to india instead it is with country they migrated to. Govt should take steps to provide the required resources and infrastructure in india..

Only then these ideas can be implemented for the betterment and advancement of the country

Well said. You clarified in a simple way when a Brain Drain is really called so and when it is not.

Divya is not right to say that the research and patents would have belonged to India. They would not have because such research opportunies simply do not exist in India.

If research opportunities do not exist in India, let India create, if it really wants to make use of the intelligence and Wisdom  for the Development of the Country.

I am trying bring in the same point. India needs to create these opportunities if it wants to harness the talents of Indians.

In the very beginning some of the members have voiced it clearly that to stop brain drain India needs to create better opportunities. It is not right to shout against brain drain and feel that those who went abroad were selfish lot because an educated person would like to utilise his/her total potential. How can we expect that people would stay back in India and remain dissatisfied in their job due to lack of opportunities while they don't lack in their ability? The government needs to work upon this and act fast to stop brain drain.

Now the Government of India , in an attempt to reduce brain Drain, started taking many measures, which resulted in establishment of new Scientific exchange agreements with the Countries like Japan and Australia. And in the next few years more exchanges are likely to follow.

You are having too much faith in government to create research facilities to keep "brainy" Indians in India. Research  flourishes in organizations whose survival is threatened if innovation does not take place. No Indian industry is under such threat. When they need technology they go and buy it from advanced countries. So why should they invest in R& D. The Indian space program is an exception because it was denied access to technologies by advanced countries for a variety of reasons. As its survival was threatened it rose to the occasion and has developed capabilities which it is now demonstrating with great pride and success. Companies like Google, Microsoft, GE, Philips, Sony, Cannon, Samsung, Apple etc have to innovate if they have to remain in business and they do so and reap benefits. Who is going to give them technology, they create their own technologies. @Rambabu is in his dream world to say that Indian Research facilities are world class. They are not because they are not needed and thus do not exist. India is still down the economic ladder to be able to finance mega R&D within the country.

Biased and distorted views.  If Rambabu has faith in the Government that is based on facts. The news clippings are not created by Rambabu.

The opportunities may be there but is it proportionate to the educated people we have in the country. Are all the eligible and willing people able to take up these opportunity. We have a lot of shortcomings, that is the reason why we are still a developing country. We need to understand where we fall short and then work towards filling those gaps.

I said, the government took the initiative for which there was a positive response from many Countries  which resulted in which  resulted in Scientific   exchanges . And i also said in the coming days some more exchanges  are likely to take place. As these exchanges are taking in different phases, it takes time to take care of all  the  educated people in the Country.

And all these details were provided in the link article.

Let's hope such measures are taken up seriously and opportunities get created more and more. It is quite natural that every employee wants job satisfaction and when one does not receive it then he/she will be in search of better opportunity and once a new door opens one would definitely try to grab it. What's wrong in it?

The link article provided by Rambabu is 9 years old...So it is not an up to date article and may not be relevant to today's times. Migration is a very common feature and people may want to work in a country of their choice for any number of reasons. Some don't succeed even in Western countries. I know quite a few such failures who do have long degrees but no capability to put that into use.

Here I would like to give an example of a very well to do French lady, a widow with no children, who came to visit India in 2001 and was fascinated and appalled at the living conditions. She got in touch with one of her Indian friends and together they decided to  adopt one small part of a village near Kollegal, a place close to Mysore and start handicrafts and other such venture and provide employment to the villagers nearby, also start a evening school for the workers. It was met with a lot of enthusiasm by the people . The lady and the Indian struggled for nearly 2 years with the paper work and finally she gave up after 5 or 6 trips to India with nothing going forward, took the Indian friend and his family to France as well..

Our country is a muddle and educated and thinking Indians find it an uphill task to get along and do their best unless they are ready to compromise, so n wonder they want to leave to seek better opportunities elsewhere . The only ones that dont seem to have such difficulty is the IT personnel who have it good all he way, since most of them get to live and work abroad as well ..

No one is against migration. It is when migrant Indians are touted as a loss to the country that opinions differ. The few Indians who do good and become famous abroad do not represent the Vast majority of Indians. If they had stayed back they may have done good in their chosen careers. India is being built by resident Indians and not by migrated Indians. It is they who should be cheered for all the relative hardships they face and not lament about those who chose to go away for whatever reasons.

MIT has a culture of nurturing such talent which is not their in rule driven India.Imagine if she is admitted into a college in India without 12 th exam, how other parents would fight tooth and nail and even move courts. So culture of innovation is first to be created then such developments can happen here.

Exactly the reason why brain drain occurs! They are not appreciated here!

Not just not appreciated, the brainy students who speak out and stand out from the rest are ridiculed. Probably the teachers feel insulted to know that the student is far smarter than them so to cover up their own lack, they put down the student  instead of helping and encouraging them. I have seen this happen..
