Suresh Raina by scoring a century for India on debut created history when he became the first Indian to score a century in all the three formats of the game i.e. One dayers, T20 and Test Matches. Suresh Raina who made his debut for India in Test Matches in Sri Lanka in the second test of the 3 match series played on 26th July finds himself in a situation that he will create history if he does not play a Test Match again for India.
SureshRaina finished the series with a average of 111.50 after having scored 223 runs in the series as was one of the successes of the tour. Everybody in India knows that Raina got into the team only because of illness to Yuvraj Singh and should Raina not play a test again for India then he would have the distinction of having a average higher than the legendary Sir Don Bradman. Infact Bradmans average has been bettered by a West Indian wicketkeeper A G Ganteaume who scored a century on debut but never ever got to play a Test Match for his country.
Wicket keeper A G Ganteaume made his debut for West Indies in the second test match against England which was played at Port of Span during 11th to 16th Feb 1948. In reply to Englands 362 all out in the first innings A G Ganteaume who opened the innings top scored with 112 in his debut innings to take the West Indians to 497 all out. However A G Ganteaume was reported to have slowed down when nearing to his century and that affected West Indian chances of a victory in the test. West Indies did not allow their opener Ganteaume to bat in the second innings and they finished at 72 for 3 in their innings drawing the test match and 4 Test series 0-0. Ganteaume never got a chance to play for West Indies because of his selfish play and what compounded his probably was the fact that West Indies had a formidable batting up those days which boasted of the likes of Sobers, Weekes and Walcott.
Suresh Raina finds himself in a win win situation irrespective of the fact that whether or not he would get a chance to play another test for India. If he does not get a chance to represent India he can console himself saying that he has a average better than Bradman and if he gets to chance to play for India which is likely considered the fact that Dravid, Sachin and Laxman are nearing their retirement ages he has the opportunity to stick around provided he maintains his form. There is also another possibility that by the time the seniors call it a day, youngsters more capable than Raina may sneak into the team which however looks unlikely as Raina himself finds in the team as there are no capable youngsters.
