The third edition of Indian Premier which concluded on 25th April 2010 proved to be a huge disappointment for two brothers who represented India in the shorter formats of the game. While the brothers dished out disappointing performances match after match annoying the fans of their respective teams, the ones who would be more disappointed would be the team owners since the brothers were bought at a premium by their respective owners.
We are talking about Yusuf Pathan who was being talked about highly being the commencement of IPL 2010, and Irfan Pathan who was fortunate enough to play for India inspite of dishing inconsistent performances. To begin with Yusuf Pathan started IPL 2010 with a rollicking innings of 100 in 37 deliveries in Rajasthan's extraordinary chase against Mumbai Indians which they eventually lost, but then everything ended from where it started for the senior brother with that innings. In the next 13 innings Yusuf Pathan scored a mere 233 runs at paltry average 19.41 and was literally responsible for his teams inability to make the semi finals as a lot depended on him.
Yusuf Pathans younger and more celebrated brother Irfan Pathan was a bigger disappointment of the two, conceding 9.19 runs per over in 14 matches which means the allow their opponents to score an imposing 184 in a innings and one which is impossible to chase. If a player gets a chance to play the entire 14 matches that means that he enjoys the confidence of the captain as is assured of a place in team and taking this point into consideration Irfan Pathan should have had a far better economy rate that what he ended up with. It was not only the economy rate of Irfan Pathan which affected the fortunes of his team, but the fact that he was leaking runs at crucial stages in the match when the matches were in favour of his team was what hurt his skipper and the team owners.
The inconsistency of the brothers actually helped in settling the final two spots in IPL 2010. Irfan Pathan dropped a catch of his elder brother Yousuf Pathan in a league match between Punjab and Rajasthan. The catch eventually cost Irfans Punjab the match. Rajasthan and Punjab finished the tournament occupying the last and second slot slots with 6 wins and 4 winsrespectively. Had Irfan taken the catch both the teams would have finished on par with 5 wins each.
