Sometimes might or strength may fail in certain case, even persuasion may fail. In such cases, it is important for a man not to feel bewildered. He should try to use his wits and hit upon some plan.
One day, the great king Akbar fell ill. He had a very bad pain and sent for the doctor. The doctor came and examined the king and then said. ``your highness, I have a very good medicine for you. It will make you well in to time but you must take it with bull’s milk.’’ Then he took out a bottle from his box gave it to Akbar.
King Akbar had never heard of a bull that gave milk. So he was surprised to hear of such an impossible instruction. He asked the doctor, ``is there some mistake? Did you say bull’s milk?’’
The doctor said. ``No there is no mistake. Birbal is a clever man. There is nothing he cannot do. Order Birbal to get it for you’’.
The doctor hated Birbal who had put an end to some of the bad things he used to do. The doctor thought that this was chance to take revenge.
When doctor left, Akbar sent for Birbal and told him about the doctor’s instructions. Wise Birbal understood immediately that doctor was only trying to make trouble for him because a bull cannot give any milk.
Birbal said to the king. ``Your highness! Surely you known that a bull cannot give any milk.’’ Akbar shouted, ``But Birbal, the doctor has told me that milk of any female animal will not do. Go and get some bull’s milk immediately.’’ Birbal knew it was useless to argue any more. So he bowed low and went away.’’ Birbal knew it was useless to argue any more. So he bowed low and went away.
At home Birbal sat in deep thought wondering how to get bull’s milk. His daughter noticed that something was wrong with her father. She asked, ``Dear father! Is everything okay at the court? Birbal told the whole story. She said, ``Please don’t worry. I will help you father’’.
Next day, she tied a bundle of old clothes and went to the river near the place. She selected spot just below the king’s bedroom window and waited as soon as the light from the king’s room was put off; she knew the king was getting ready to sleep. Immediately, she wet the clothes and started to beat them with stick. Every time she beat the clothes, she shouted, ``Hoop! Wow! This went on and on.
Because of the noise the king could not sleep. He was very angry. He called his guard and told him to find out what all that noise was. The guard saw a girl standing knee deep in the river washing clothe. The angry guard asked, ``what are you doing here at this hour of the night?’’
The guard dragged her into the palace and brought her before the king. The king was very. He asked, ``Who are you’? How dare you disturb my sleep and how dare you to wash clothes at this hour of the night!’’
The girl said, ``Pardon me your highness. Mt father gave birth to a lovely baby boy this evening. I was so busy the whole evening that I could come to wash the dirty clothes only at night.’’
Akbar shouted, ``Are you making a fool of me? Who ever heard of a man having a baby?’’ she replied, ``your Highness. I too had never heard of such a thing but strange things are happening in our kingdom. Even you have given orders for bull’s milk.’’
The king suddenly realized his foolishness. He smiled and asked the girl, ``who are you?’’ she replied, ``I am Birbal’s daughter. ``The king was very impressed with the girl’s cleverness and courage. The king said, ``Go and tell your father that I have received the bull’s milk.’’ The doctor was so surprised that he fell ill.
So, it is wisdom which is the last word in human ingenuity.
