`Can not I come to the, film, too?’ asked Varun.
`No, I am sorry, you are too small,’ said his father. `Your grandfather will look after you. He does not want to come to the film.’
Varun left sad. His sister put on a pretty dress. His brother put on his new shirt. They were laughing. He went to his mother. `Mother, can not I come to the film?’’’ I will be frightened of the dark at home,’ he said. `No dear, you are too small to come to the film,’ she said. `You grandfather will look after you,’
Varun felt very sad. His mother put on a beautiful blue sari and his father combed his hair. He went to his grandmother. `Father, can not I come to the film?’ he asked. `I will be lonely at home.’
`No. you would not be lonely, my dear,’ said his grandmother. `Your grandfather is here. He will look after you. Now put on your pant, clean your teeth and go to sleep.’
Varun was sad and angry. He put on his pant and cleaned his teeth.
Soon Varun’s family went out to the cinema. Varun sat beside his grandfather. `Grandfather, tell me a story,’ he said, so his grandfather told lots of lovely stories. He told him the story of …then he stopped. His hand was shaking. He said, `Varun, I do not feel very well. Bring me a glass of water, please.’
`Yes, grandfather,’ he said. He went to the kitchen. He took a glass of water with both hands. He did not spill any of it.
His grandfather drank some water. Then he said, `Varun, there is a bottle of pills by my bed. Bring them here please.’
`Yes, grandfather,’ said Varun. He went to his grandfather’s bed. He saw the bottle of pills and took it to his grandfather. His grandfather took two pills and drank some more water.
Then his grandfather said, `Varun, I am still feeling sick. Please go and ask…’ grandfather stopped talking. Arun was frightened. Why did not his grandfather talk?’ what did his grandfather want?
Then he remembered his aunt and uncle. They lived down the road. But it was dark. `Oh dear!’ thought Varun. `I am frightened of the dark. I do not want to go out alone. But grandfather is not well. I must look after him’.
Varun opened the door. It was very dark outside. He felt afraid. But he went out. The trees looked big and black. What was that behind the wall? He ran as fast as he could to his aunt and uncle’s house. He banged on their door.
Varun- `Uncle!’ he shouted.
His aunt opened the door.
`Why, Varun! What is the matter?’
`it is grandfather. He is not well at all. Please come and see.
He ran back home with his aunt. She telephoned the doctor. The doctor came quickly. She gave grandfather an injunction. Soon grandfather felt better. `What happened?’ he asked.
`Your father was very ill, but he is all right now,’ said the doctor. `Your son is very clever and brave little boy. He got help just in time.’
Everybody hugged Varun. `You are a wonderful boy!’ said his grandmother. `I said your grandfather was going to look after you- but you looked after him!’
