The LORD Of The RINGS (2001-2003).

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is actually a one giant movie (theatrical version - 9 hrs long, extended version - nearly 12 hrs) which was shot at once & later edited into 3 separate parts n released over a span of 3 yrs. The 3 separate parts are... The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers & The Return of the King. The Lord of the Rings motion picture trilogy is adapted from the novel of the same name by J.R.R.Tolkien which also was released in 3 parts named just like the movie is. Today, regarded as one of the most finely tuned n cinematically perfect films ever made, not only by moviegoers but critics as well. This is the Movie of a Lifetime.
Peter Jackson directed a film that was considered, for a very long time, impossible to make, n not only for technical reasons. The narrative roots are incredibly long n detailed, n the storyline is deeply connected with the creation of a fantastic continent from a time unknown called 'Middle Earth'. Peter Jackson went out to achieve the impossible & came out with a recreation of the original tht is pure n true to the story in every detail. He has given a film for which he'll be remembered for a long long time. He showed everyone tht he is a man with a sweeping cinematic vision. Being a fan of LOTR novels himself, he knew exactly how to make this project big n he didnt disappoint. Instead, he exceeded all expectations. The Fellowship of the Ring was a faithful adaptation of the novel by him, The Two Towers, which was the hardest part to make according to him, coz of no proper start or end, but still.. he managed to do a hell of a great job. But, he saved his best for… The Return of the King. The last part showed what a great storyteller he is. His vision, imagination, presentation & the breathtaking amount of detail with which he showed this story is no less than perfection. Nobody could've made The Lord of the Rings as great as it deserved to be other than Peter Jackson.
The Academy Award winning music of the The Lord of the Rings film trilogy was composed, orchestrated, conducted n produced by Howard Shore. It is today, the most successful composition of Shore's career n is one of the most popular orchestral film scores of all time. Just like the film, the music too is... A Masterpiece. The music gets better n better as we move from The Fellowship of the Ring to The Two Towers & finally to The Return of the King... n so was the trend of the movies. The score has contributed a lot to the scenes n presenting Middle-Earth on the big screen. Easily one of my all time fav soundtracks .
The cast is simply stunning. You couldn't have asked for a better cast. Every actor has done justice to his/her role. Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins was simply fabulous n he gets better n more mature as the story goes on. Infact, a slight error in The Return of the King would've ruined everything, but he carried this character flawlessly. Sean Astin gives a stunning supporting role as Samwise Gamgee which gets better n better with each instalment. Ian McKellen brings his experience n gives an Oscar nominated Supporting role as Gandalf. Viggo Mortensen was another lead actor in the film, playing Aragorn.. the heir of Kings n he didnt disappoint. Orlando Bloom has always done great as a supporting cast, be it Pirates of the Caribbean, Troy etc. But, the surprise package here was... Andy Serkis portrayal of the character Gollum/Smeagol. It was simply the most amazing performance in the whole trilogy. Andy Serkis gave it everything he could. Even though the character was CGI (computer generated imagery) but Andy Serkis provides such brilliant emotions to it tht it left me amazed. Gollum is profoundly disturbing, amusing, almost lovable all coz of Serkis. And after watching the making of The Lord of the Rings, I appreciate Andy Serkis work even more. Andy Serkis has made Gollum one of the most memorable characters, all by his brilliant performance.
The Visual Effects in this epic is far beyond any comparisons. The perfection in the special effects area achieved by this movie is yet to be surpassed. Peter Jackson has used the visual effects to the maximum amount but still well controlled. Visually stunning n amazingly well done camerawork makes this film, a complete visual treat. Every part was filmed with extreme care to the details tht the books actually deserved. This film has set a new standard for visual effects, which will not be easy to surpass sooner, if not ever. Middle-Earth comes alive... in breathtaking detail, thanks to the Visual Effects n classic Cinematography.
The Lord of the Rings is set in a fictional world of Middle Earth, its 3 parts follow the young Hobbit Frodo Baggins as he & a Fellowship embark on a quest to destroy the One Ring, thus ensuring the destruction of its maker, the Dark Lord Sauron.
The Fellowship of the Ring is the most faithful adaptation of the 3 parts. It shows the formation of the Fellowship n the beginning of the quest. Frodo n his 3 Hobbit friends Merry (Dominic Monaghan), Pippin (Billy Boyd) n Samwise (Sean Astin) are joined by the great wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Legolas the elf (Orlando Bloom), Gimli the dwarf (John Rhys-Davies), Aragorn the heir of Kings (Viggo Mortensen) n the brave warrior Boromir (Sean Bean). The movie ends with the breaking of the Fellowship.
The Two Towers starts where The Fellowship of the Ring ended. It follows three separate storylines... one of Frodo n Sam, on their path to destroy the One Ring, guided by Gollum/Smeagol (Andy Serkis), other of Merry n Pippin, n the final one of Aragorn, Gimli n Legolas who are now aided by more allies. No doubt, the movie, though not completely faithful to the book like the 1st part, is better than The Fellowship of the Ring. The acting, the visual effects, the music etc, it just gets better. Best part in the film is the end... The Battle of Helm's Deep.
The Return of the King is the final chapter n easily, the best of the three. Its even better than 1st n 2nd parts combined. The direction, the performances, the action, the cinematography, the visual effects, the musical score... everything... is at its peak here. Since it is the climax n resolution of the epic journey, it has a little more intensity n urgency than the previous installments. The Beginning, Minas Tirith, Lighting of Beacons, The Battle of Pelennor Fields, Shelob's Liar, the Final Battle, Ring taking over Frodo in the end & the end of all things... are some scenes to watch out for. Truly a masterpiece. Its the final chapter tht makes this trilogy, the greatest ever.
You dont have to be a fan of The Lord of the Rings novel or Fantasy genre to determine the greatness of this epic... you will still find it gripping even if you have no idea about Elves, Dwarves, Wizards, Orcs, Nazguls etc ... Infact, this is the only film in the fantasy genre tht I admire, appreciate n respect very much.
The Lord of the Rings... is, indeed, my all time fav film.

Runtime - 2 hrs
Starring - Dev Patel, Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan & Freida Pinto
Music by - A.R.Rahman
Written by - Simon Beaufoy
Directed by - Danny Boyle & Loveleen Tandan.
One of the best films of 2008, Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of Jamal, a young man from the slums of Mumbai who appears on the game show 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' & exceeds all expectations, arousing the suspicions of the game show host, played superbly by Anil Kapoor & of law enforcement officials.
This is Danny Boyle's one of the best, if not his best, direction. The performance he brought out from the cast is really impressive. The technical execution is even better. Be it the editing, cinematography, the raw style or the locations.. this film scores in all. This definitely is among the year's top 5 films & many times better than any Bollywood film released in 2008.
The cast is almost perfect. Every cast has done justice to his/her characters. Dev Patel impresses as Jamal. Anil Kapoor as the host of the game show was amazing. Irrfan Khan was as consistent as ever. But, the real show stealers here are the performances of the younger casts. Touching, Gripping, Realistic, Innocent... few words to describe their performance.
The great A.R.Rahman gives yet another great n classic soundtrack tht perfectly accompanies the action on screen. Perfectly suiting the film's theme, this is one of Rahman's best work. Loved the 'Jai Ho' song... the instrumental music in tht song is too good. He might have given better music in Indian films (acc to many) but this is 1 film tht is providing him all the honors n recognition around the world tht he so truly deserves, much more than any other Indian. The world will now see more of Rahman n will discover tht he is no less than the great John Williams, Howard Shore or Hans Zimmer.
Wasn't expecting much from this film, but it turned out to be good,... Really Good .

Brad Pitt is impressive but not that much.....very good story.Nominated for this year's Oscar.

Husbands & wives!
Woody Allen's normal dose of interestin comments both laughable and thought provoking was thr at its best in this too. "the only time married couples get a simultaneous orgasm is when the judge sanctions the divorce." or "You use sex to express every emotion except love." or the rather simpler one "It's the Second Law of Thermodynamics: sooner or later everything turns to shit. That's my phrasing, not the Encyclopedia Britannica." to give a few egs.
Nicely sketchd out the film really grows on you. Very gud watch. The recent release Dil Kabadi was the hindi version of this.

I have no words to say, i am absolutely speechless. But i know one thing for sure that it has moved to the greatest-movies-ive-seen list right away. And one thing more Robert De Niro was absolutely amazing, you could see through his soul from his eyes, his animal within, his decadence, everything. I ve never quite seen anyone perform like that. He was brilliant.

SPOILER!
Kurbaan (2009)
It was supposed to be a thriller, which it wasn't exactly. Had it been made before New York, may be the results would have been different. New York had a concrete concept and it had matter in it. I feel Kurbaan was really loose on that front. Innumerable flaws & you have to agree the way they've displayed the NYPD is miserable. Police Department in the States is undoubtedly better than what we saw in the movie. It was painfully slow which ain't very good for a thriller specially when it's Bollywood. Infact Kaminey had better pace than this movie. May be I'm too uptight about this movie, but I've really seen movies better than this. And you cannot neglect the fact that Kareena's character was really loose and unnecessary to have glorified a terrorists life, specially after what he's been through in the past. They were actually showcasing their affair on-screen. For that, dude(Saif) no need! We hardly give a damn about it!
Now everybody know why Saif and Kareena went almost everywhere (even a one episode stupid Koffee with Karan a.k.a Date with Kurbaan where they talked about everything except the movie.) No doubt they needed to convince audience this bad. They knew there was nothing left in the lost cause, just tried to gather whatever they could!
P.S.: Karan, I need my money back and I promise I will erase Kurbaan like nothing like that ever happened to me. But please, do not produce a movie for off-screen couple's on-screen promotion!

If i was held at a gunpoint and asked to pick one movie which i would consider my personal favourite of all times this should be tat movie. I totally fell in love with this movie and I have watched it for... ahem... i have lost the count. This movie celebrates the spirit of humanity, independence, friendship, hope and the sense of belonging. Isnt it just about everything that we live for.
The movie revolves around the long imprisonment of young banker ANDY DUFRESNE (Tim Robbins) in the fictional SHAWSHANK prison. He is wrongly convicted for killing his wife who had an affair with someone else. Every emotion he goes through in the prsion is something which will stay with you for eternity. The torture by the JAIL FACULTY and by the SISTERS who eventually rape him, the friendship and warmth by the gang of RED and RED himself the monopoly and bureaucracy of the jailor, ANDY's intelligence and his way of life will forever stay with u. If anybody has missed this movie... its hightime... u catch it
MEMENTO (2000).
Runtime - 1 hr 53 min
Starring - Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss & Joe Pantoliano
Written by - Christopher Nolan
Directed by - Christopher Nolan.
The most intelligent, the most innovative & the most original brain teaser of all time tht will have you guessing from the very beginning to the very end n even afterwards... thts what Memento is ... its no less than a jigsaw puzzle. The groundbreaking narrative style & impressive dramatic undertones makes this film an instant classic.
Memento is a psychological thriller starring Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby, a man who lost his short term memory in an assault and, despite his handicap, is looking for the person who, according to him, killed his wife n made him like this.
Director Christopher Nolan deserves kudos for presenting the film in such a unique way which was never-seen-before in cinema history. Nolan puts his viewers into the shoes of Leonard Shelby & runs the story in reverse order so that you never know more than Leonard does. Just like Leonard, you've no knowledge of what happened before.
The performance by the cast is impressive. The character of Leonard Shelby is very very well played by Guy Pearce. Carrie-Anne Moss n Joe Pantoliano give an equally mysterious n complex performances as Natalie n Teddy respectively. The direction is class apart. The editing is terrific n groundbreaking. Christopher Nolan is really an extremely talended film-maker & a much better storyteller (Following, Memento, Insomnia, The Prestige, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight proves it) & is simply the best director we have at present.
Classic, innovative, complex, exciting n entertaining movie of a lifetime... thts Memento for you. It will leave its own memento on your mind, & you'll have a hard time forgetting how much you enjoyed it while solving this puzzle on your own.

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (1994).
Runtime - 2 hrs 22 min
Starring - Tim Robbins & Morgan Freeman
Written by - Frank Darabont
Directed by - Frank Darabont.
At its time of release, it flopped commercially. At Oscars, it was nominated for 7 awards & it still went empty handed.
Out of the 3 big classics of 1994 (Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption & Pulp Fiction), this movie is a clear winner. Better than Forrest Gump & Pulp Fiction?? ... the answer is YES.
This movie is a classic, easily 1 of the best crafted movie ever. It is 1 of those films tht is a true work of both art & magic. A very moving story about hope & the power of friendship. One of the finest n flawless performance u'll ever get 2 see. It is a simple film, yet it has an everlasting message. Its not a typical Hollywood flick, so dont go 4 it xpecting it 2 b a light hearted movie.
Andy (Tim Robbins) is sentenced to 2 consecutive life terms in prison 4 the murders of his wife & her lover in the year 1947. However, only Andy knows tht he didn't commit the crimes. Sent 2 Shawshank prison 2 do hard time, Andy has 2 learn 2 get by in the brutal, cutthroat confines of prison life. His quiet strength slowly earns the respect of his fellow inmates, most notably, Red (Morgan Freeman) & even much of the prison staff. But Andy's seemingly stoic acceptance of his unjust imprisonment hides a fierce determination 4 freedom. One of the best scene in the movie is the way he escapes from the prison. Truly Mindblowing.
This beautifully crafted movie features touching & sincere performances from the entire cast, with an uplifting message about humanity's indomitable spirit & the redemptive value of hope.
If Tim Robbins was at its best, then, Morgan Freeman, in particular, is exceptional. His performance is so unshowy tht it can easily go unnoticed, but it's the soul of this film.
Dont miss it. Thoroughly recommended.

THE GODFATHER (1972).
Runtime - 2 hrs 55 min
Starring - Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall & Deane Keaton
Music by - Nino Rota & Carmine Coppolla
Written by - Mario Puzo & Francis Ford Coppolla
Directed by - Francis Ford Coppolla.
One of the few films where direction, acting, cinematography, screenplay, score etc can be described by just one word... CLASSIC. It certainly is... the greatest motion picture of all time. The Godfather is one of the very few films tht doesn't have a single flaw. It is, undoubtedly, the greatest crime saga ever told on screen.
The acting from every cast in this film is sheer class. The exceptional display of Don Vito Corleone n Michael Corleone by the legendary Marlon Brando n Al Pacino respectively makes this film... immortal. Also, not to forget the performances by Robert Duvall, James Caan, Deane Keaton n Al Leittieri as Tom Hagen, Santino 'Sonnie' Corleone, Kay Adams n Sollozzo respectively... they're all perfect. Its the film with the best cast ever.
Francis Ford Coppola outdid himself with this masterpiece. The brilliant screenplay, excellent cinematography, tight editing gave birth to the greatest movie ever made. The locations, the deaths, the violence, the dialogues... this movie has got all n tht also of the highest class. The score is beautiful & one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. It gives a different feel to this film... cant resist falling in love with it.
The story actually revolves around Michael Corleone, played perfectly by Al Pacino. The main plot of the story is the evolution of Michael Corleone from a doe-eyed outsider who didn't want to get into his family business to a ruthless boss later in the story.
It does not need my recommendation coz its a must watch for any moviegoer. The Godfather is universally accepted as the best film of all time & the performances by Al Pacino n Marlon Brando alone are the stuff of legends.

THE GODFATHER PART II (1974).
Runtime - 3 hrs 20 min
Starring - Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Robert Duvall, John Cazale & Deane Keaton
Music by - Nino Rota & Carmine Coppolla
Written by - Mario Puzo & Francis Ford Coppolla
Directed by - Francis Ford Coppolla.
Considered by many to be the most critically & artistically successful sequel in movie history, & certainly the most honored. The Godfather Part II is both, a sequel & a prequel to The Godfather, chronicling the story of the Corleone family following the events of the first film while also depicting the rise to power of the young Vito Corleone.
Francis Ford Coppolla continues his epic Godfather trilogy with this saga of 2 generations of power within the Corleone family. One shows the humble Sicilian beginnings & New York rise of a young Don Vito (played by Marlon Brando in The Godfather), now played in an Oscar-winning performance for Best Supporting Actor by Robert De Niro. The other shows the ascent of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) as the new Don.
Francis Ford Coppolla has produced a movie of staggering magnitude n vision; the film recieved 11 Academy Awards nominations, winning 6 including Best Picture, the first sequel to win it. Its the only trilogy which has won 2 Best Picture as well as Best Director at Oscars. Some call it equal or even superior to the original but for me, it isnt even equal, though closer to tht.
The performance by the cast is electrifying. Robert De Niro is exceptional as Don Vito Corleone (reminds of Marlon Brando), all his dialogues are in sicilian language in this film. Al Pacino matures in his character of Michael Corleone, his best performance ever. The ruthless boss, gets even much more ruthless & merciless. Diane Keaton as Kay is as charming as she was in the original. John Cazale & Michael V. Gazzo are surprise package here as Fredo Corleone & Frankie Pentangeli respectively.
Strongly Recommended.
Rating - 9/10
THE GODFATHER PART III (1990).
Runtime - 2 hrs 50 min
Starring - Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Andy Garcia & Sofia Coppolla
Music by - Carmine Coppolla
Written by - Mario Puzo & Francis Ford Coppolla
Directed by - Francis Ford Coppolla.
I must say, this film is very much under-rated. Its not tht bad as critics & viewers have been calling it. It certainly didnt reach where The Godfather & The Godfather Part II stands but this movie stands well on its own. The Godfather Part III completes the story of Michael Corleone, a mafia kingpin who tries to legitimize his criminal empire.
Al Pacino plays Don Michael Corleone, who is getting old & losing his health n power too. Talia Shire & Diane Keaton reprise their roles of Connie Corleone (Michael's sister) n Kay Adams from previous films & completely justify their characters yet again. Al Pacino gives yet another classic performance, as good as it was in the previous Godfather films. Its the new cast tht disappoints.
Andy Garcia plays Vincent Mancini (Santino Corleone's illegitimate son) & really impresses with his oscar-nominated performance. The biggest disappointment here is Sofia Coppolla's performance as Mary Corleone (Michael's daughter). With the help of overacting & hamming, she completely ruined this film... it certainly is the worst performance by any cast in The Godfather Trilogy.
Despite some shortcomings, The Godfather Part III is a decent ending to the greatest crime saga of all time. Francis Ford Coppolla's intention was clearly aimed at offering a story of redemption... Nominated for 7 Academy Awards, the motion picture reflects Coppolla's masterful film-making.
The Godfather & The Godfather Part II are a work of art & class... beyond comparisons. The Godfather Part III isnt as great as those but isnt bad too. It has good story, fine performances, classic cinematography, good direction, beautiful score & cool editing.
A Must Watch.

The movie is good in places, but the intensity is not maintained throughout. there are som places where it goes completely cold, ACTUALLY i'm not sure if the story is INTERESTING enough to be told... the last 30 minutes r gripping n that makes the rest of THE MOVIE worthwhile. The cast which includes Daniel Craig has done quite a good joB. watchable.. 6.5/10

"Chalte Chalte" is a Hindi film which was released in the year 2003, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee in the lead roles. The other artistes inthe picture include: Jas Arora, Sathish Shah, Jayashree.T and Rajeev Verma. The director of the movie is Aziz Varm and the music was scored by Jatin Pandit and Lalit Pandit.
In this movie, Raj(Shah Rukh Khan) falls in deep love with Priya(Rani Mukherjee). As a result, the engagement of Priya scheduled with Sameer, her betrothed, is called off and Priya gets wedded to Raj with the consent of one and all. This clearly brings out the significance of love in life. Hence, this scene touches my heart and makes it a memorable one.
The couple live a blissful life for one year, after which tension starts to pick up in the family, mainly because of Raj’s disorderly and unkempt ways like throwing shoes and clothes in the hall or dumping cigar ends at all places. Priya, who is more practical and a perfectionist, patiently tells him to change his ways, but finally gives up. On one occasion, when Raj becomes insolvent, Priya helps him come out of his predicament by giving him the money that she had borrowed from Sameer, but lies to him stating that the money is from her own earnings. Raj, later comes to know of the true source of the money and flares up at Priya. At this, Priya loses her patience and she finally decides to bid adieu to him. So, she goes away with her aunt to the airport in order to leave the city. However, Raj comes to the airport and pleads with her to come back, promising her that he will mend his ways. Thus, both are again united.
The songs, mostly shot at scenic locations, are also nice; my favourite ones being the title track of “Chalte Chalte” and another slightly philosophical song entitled “Dagariya Chalo”.
The film focuses on the importance of cleanliness in the home which is what makes me feel good about the movie. It also brings out the significance of a healthy family where both the husband and wife are equally important in managing the household. Also, hidden in the movie is the good thought of helping others who are in need, which is the main purpose of our existence. All in all, the film is a good one which is worth watching as it has a word of advice and also demonstrates the value of love.
The IMDb rating for this movie is 6.5/10 and the movie comes under the genre "Drama/Romance". i strongly recommend this movie for all those who are against violent and like watching a mix of romance and family drama.
