Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Director : Tim BurtonExecutive Producer : Francis Ford CoppolaCast : Johnny Depp,Christopher Walken,Cristina RicciPlot :Based on the novel by Washington Irving "The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow" where constable Ichabod Crane is sent to inspect the horrific and mysterious murders by the Headless Horseman by his rather scientific methods.Review: Horror ! Mystery !! Fantasy !!! Thats what ties Depp and Burton together and now when they get a Washington Irving piece to fantasize upon, they can keep no stones unturned. The movie starts with the backdrop of ancient New York City of 1799(a symbolism between the doorstep of the enigamtic 18th century and the industrially awakened 19th),yes you just have to comprehend it yourself when you are watching a Burton movie!!!And Depp, the constable with a rather scientific bent of mind wants all trials and justice to be meted out after a thorough investigation. And blessed he is(or cursed),cause he is sent to the Sleepy Hollow to exercise his scientific methods where even pontific exercises have failed. I shall not talk about the story anymore and spoil the treat for a numerous others.I shall not say how the constable watched death and felt the chasis of hell below his heels,I wont say how the magic spells cast me into a trance and transformed my being into the valleys of Sleepy Hollow. I shall talk about the performers. The brilliant look of darkness on the eyes of Depp.Ohh how well he portrays the weakness of the living versus the undead, yet the valor to strike the same.He is a phenomenon once again. The narrative flashbacks, without any dialogues were the strongest part of the movie where Lisa Marie and the young mysterious child -Depp's imaginative childhood was shown with the highest detail of fantasy possible. The production is gorgeous in every way; the cinematography is hauntingly beautiful, the set design is incredible and the way Burton uses the landscape to match his story is awe-inspiring. And this is how Sleepy Hollow works....in the darkest part of our cerebrum..in the sleepy imaginative figments of our own quest for the past...what if the tides of time swing back someday??What if graves are unearthed??What if Tim Burton's muse was real??? We shall turn back to Johnny Depp. AMEN !!! My Rating: 8/10

No country for old men

no country for old men is one of the best movies i have ever seen...saw it again yesterday!!!

everything about the movie is perfect...(*this may contain spilers*)

1.the camera work is PERFECT..the movie lacks dialogue and uses the visual and audio mediums to express...when josh brolin first enters the scene where the multiple murder has taken place ...the scene is completely explained using visual shots..and by careful observation it can be deduced what has happened there..characters are developed by showing their actions rather than using dialogues....the visual medium is used to convey messages-when anton chigurh kills josh brolins wife, the murder is not shown..but it is clear that he killed her when he wiped his feet!

2.people say that why didnt the coens use any additional BG music for this movie...my opinion is...just to emphasise on the natural sounds they have excluded flowery BG music...and also to make the situations very very realistical...to create REAL shock in the minds of the viewers using natural sounds ..and its terrifying and shocking!
also the lack of dialogue in the movie makes the dialogues which is present much more interesting and meaningful!

3.the message of fate and chance in this movie is brilliant...everything in life depends on fate..the coin toss is a denotion of fate...listen to the dialogs more carefully u will get the message..

4.anton chigurh is a character which is compared with the best of villains in history-eg hannibal lectre,joker..etc...he is so calm and is so fucking dangerous..and feel no pain at all while killing people...that character really gives me the creeps..and the weopons he uses that vacuum thing and the shotgun with a silencer fixed are so dangerous..even when he injects himself with injections he feels pain but is unable to express it..he is so inhumane...

this movie is a 100/10 from me!!

hats off coen bros!

The Magnificent Ambersons [1942]

Director : Orson Welles
Cast : Joseph Cotten, Dolores Costello, Anne Baxter, Tim Holt, Agnes Moorehead

The Official Tagline of the movie is 'From the Man who Made "The Best Picture of 1941" '.Mentioning Not only of that year's , but considered as one of the best movies ever - Citizen Kane. After this classic, Welles made a movie based on the family values and human relationships of that era. 'The Magnificent Ambersons' is not only about the magnificence of the Ambersons but also the deterioration of their values and relationships. The story is very simple but handled with complexity such that sometimes it tends to shy away from the basic story. My problem with the movie is that it tends to be technically brilliant, great camerawork, great editing, great sets, even great acting, but the heart and soul of a movie - The story is given secondary treatment IMO. Orson Welles who is not only the director but also the narrator of the movie lacked in that aspect. Thus, you do not feel for the characters of the movie, you don't get involved in their emotional turbulence, you just are restricted to praising it's sets, camerawork, costumes and acting. Also, it might be boring for some viewers and may be considered as a substitute for sleeping pills.

Acting is a strong aspect of the movie, right from Orson Welles's best friend Joseph Cotten, to a very bright Tim Holt. From a hyper Agnes Moorehead to a restrained and graceful Dolores Costello. I would suggest this movie for viewers who view cinema as an art or who love the different aspects of film-making. But for an average movie-lover, staying away would be the option.

The French Connection (1971)

Director:William Friedkin
Cast:Gene Hackman,Roy Scheider

Plot: Curiosity of two NYPD detectives leading to an accidental discovery of an international drug deal.

Review: A beautifully carved piece of the early 70s.A great tension boiler.Few suspense movies have been able to craft its way to glory the wat The French Connection did.A perfect backdrop where an inquisitive cop allied by his partner discovers a major drug deal and try solve the mystery with little or no support from the department. If you guys want some real thriller, and not the loud no-substance stylish impossible modern day films, kindly watch this.Scheider was absolutely marvellous as the supporting guy.Gene Hackman gave a performance of my life. But my best discovery was Gene Hackman as an actor.

Well, lemme phrase it like this.I watched a Robert De Niro movie with Gene Hackman being the De Niro here.I have watched dozens of Hackman movies before and have learnt to respect him as an actor, but never before have I felt that this guy is an absolute shadow of De Niro.NO I DNT MEAN HE COPIED DE NIRO STYLE as early as 1971.What I mean is this guy gave me every single feelings of an invisible Bob working in the film.

My rating : 8/10

My Name is Khan

Well..i had expected big things from this movie..but sadly it disappointed..it doesn’t have a "story" in the true sense..but it more like the life and times of Rizwan Khan...the second half direction was messed up...and the movie kept on stretching on n on..though its a very noble effort and the message is very good...i thought the movie dilly dallied a lot..from the 2nd half onwards....but regardless of all this...why this movie is watchable is because of the awesome performance of SRK...it was just mind-blowing...great acting and excellent detailing from SRK...he is defiantly the front runner for the best actor this year...kajol's role was short..and she was decent....all in all a an above average movie..which SRK stretches to being good.
. the movie was good in bits n parts....i felt SRK over did it a bit at times....Kajol was amazing..... throughout.
Some shots were not reqd..spl. the church one with hone kamyab thing....and i felt script da ws going haywire at times.....but overall it was ok.
I was not really expecting much from the movie.....n rightly so, it din deliver . Srk made a good effort .....but was not good enough ....(again that’s my opinion).
M glad Karan Johar is experimenting with diff. type of cinema coming out of his shell.
In an interview I saw karan and Srk talking about this movie....n stuff...they were talking they wanted people to know more about the syndrome shown in the movie n spreading awareness regarding it.....Well i felt the movie was totally situated around the generalization of Muslims as terrorist and a very little emphasis was given to the Asperser’s syndrome, which i think was a down point.
Over all it was pretty avg flick.

This movie is going well only because of only on celeb name SRK kajol an karan johar otherwise. its nothing like that as it was expected from this movie same emotional crap and this time it was getting over. SRK was not doing that much good acting specially at the point when he came back to that place to save the life of his two friends from drainage ......... but it will still be great for the fans of SRK an for the people who like full emotional drama .....

its not that gr8 a movie that it is being made out to be....the plot, screenplay and story are very very predictable and don’t seem to shock the viewer. I think KJo should thank the Shiv sena for unintentionally promoting it....well, coming back to the movie, the stand out performance is by Kajol, who sails through her role.....Shahrukh Khan has over acted in the movie...i still adore his restrained performance in Swedes ! There are many moments in the film which leaves u wondering about how that could happen....eg. A church full of people understand Shahrukh speaking in Hindi and the start singing!
The movie might move some fraction of the crowd who are die hard shahrukh, kajol and Kjo fan but for an avid movie watcher, its jus another movie....to wrap it up i want to say that "MY NAME IS NOT KHAN....AND THE MOVIE IS NOT THAT GREAT"
7/ 10
