A second-year student of a private polytechnic here died after he was allegedly beaten up by a teacher of the institution on Wednesday, sparking protests from students who blocked the Villupuram-Tiruchy NH.

The student, identified as D. Prabhakaran hailing from Govindasalai in Puducherry, was rushed to the Villupuram government medical college hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The teacher was arrested. According to police sources, Prabhakaran, a student of Automobile Engineering in Ezhumalai Polytechnic, was slapped severely by Gunasekaran for failing to answer a question in class.

The teacher then pushed him out of the classroom and Prabhakaran fell to the ground and suffered injuries. The police said Prabhakaran suffered seizures after his head hit the ground and fainted. The post-mortem report is awaited, they added.

Quite shocking! Corporal punishment has no place in a civilized world and the guilt teacher should be given exemplary punishment!
This is a shocked news. The teacher should be punished.what a shocking news.

This is really very bad news, this teacher should be punished immediately....
I think the teacher deserves punishment as he is responsible for the death of the student. There are laws passed against teachers not to physically abuse any students but still things like this are happening at a regular pace...
He is one who has brought disgrace to the entire teaching community and should be sent to the place where he deserves to be !
I dont understand why teacher try to manhandle a student and face such punishment.Maybe he has not done intentionally but a life has gone due to this act. This is not first reported case but people are not getting the theme that nothing can be acheived by beating and manhandle.
Here his intention is immaterial and what should shock each and every sensible was his atrocious conduct as a teacher!
This is a very unfortunate incident. The teacher's behavior is criminal. It is too much to behave with students of engineering. There should be no room for angry behavior for deficiency in learning process. It is possible that a student is not so attentive. But studentsin higher classes are responsible enough and there is no need to be harsh for slow learning.

Even otherwise, punishment must notresult in serious injury or death. Punishment for indiscipline like ragging and harassing other students, insulting teachers and classmates is undwerstandable. But this must also not be administered arbitrarily and angrily.

What exactly has struck me is the fact that such brutal treament was meted out to an enginnering student who was supposed to be mature enough!
The teachers should keep their personal anger and frustration at bay when they teach. A teacher in the true sense is one who forgets everything about his personal worries and short comings in life when he devotes his time to students or indulge with teaching....
