Our cities are bursting with traffic.  Chennai and Bangalore may be the worst cases, where travel, even by the most expensive car in the world, will never be a happy experience.  Flyovers have been constructed, and many new routes have also been created.  However, the traffic is horrible, and keeps increasing with every single day.

How do we make it better?  Why not, for example, encourage private mini buses, on all short routes?  The operators can be regulated in terms of the actual fare that they can collect for all distances on such routes.

The second suggestion is to run public buses on long routes that touch new areas, so that the traffic is reduced on areas in the core city.  This is being done to some extent, in Chennai, where the public buses ply to a distance of sixty kilometers.

Can car pooling become more common, so that the number of cars is reduced?  What more can be done to reduce traffic in our cities?

It is better to improve public transport viz. govt. roadways, private bus service, taxis etc and discourage personal vehicles.

Building more metro trains in our cities will go a long way to ease traffic on roads.

Situation in most of cities are alike weather it is small or big. Vehicles are increasing everyday but roads remains are earilier. Best way to control it is public transport, no alternate of it.

I agree it is better to increase the public transportation to reduce the number of vehicles on street. In case if public transportation is not possible or does not cover the route, I think car pooling I better choice.. People should either walk or use bicycle instead of car for short distance commute.. Unecessary use of private vehicle should be reduced which can be done by educating the community and telling them the advantages of reducing the use of private vehicles..

All solutions can be viable only if a reliable public transport is available, otherwise people will use their own vehicles to commute.

Yeah it is a good idea !! But it is only possible if the driver and his conductor is trustworthy to the person who is travelling in their vehicles

The Main problem lies in faulty Urban Planning. Urban planning did not envisage the increasing population. Asa result, road encroaching took place stalling the smooth flow of Traffic. Now presently, it makes no difference whether it is Public Transport or private transport or Car pooling.

if we use local transport for reaching somewhere near then it will be better for everyone because by doing this less vehicles will be used and traffic jam will be often or it can't be also.

Traffic Jams are caused by encroaching of the road and pavements by food vendors.  It is not possible for those people who want to park their vehicles. Naturally the  vehicle owners park their vehicles on the roads. This causes Traffic Jams.

Rambabu states that Urban Planning did not envisage increasing population. It is the biggest joke in a country whose population is the second largest in the world. Give a better reason.
