Being assertive is good or bad ?

Person being in a place where he must use his assertiveness has no choice but to use his powers to keep his organisation in proper working. The persons who are not self confident or lenient lose their position for not being competent. In the process they might be looked down by incapable ones but that is part of the game which makes no difference. The person is performing his duty only.

It means a person's ability to call " A Spade A Spade. " The ability to say YES or NO according to the situation. You said such assertive people are looked down. But is not the responsibility of the self assertive man to convince the other party ? Is it good to have the attitude of " Who Cares attitude "?

No it's not the duty of a person if he is asserting in order to maintain discipline of the house and if the party effected does not understand the point it's not the fault of person discharging his duty. He should not care for such people whatever the result. If he is being looked down in the process by defaulter, it's not his fault but hardheadedness of the person if not getting the point. And a spade is in any case a spade, that's very much understood.

Don't you think he will be making more foes than friends ? Man is not an island. He lives in the society. Establishing good relations with the others is a vital aspect of a civilized human. I feel the person with assertiveness can lay a strong foundation for his assertiveness through softer and non - aggressive ways.

 

I have faced hundreds of (un) professionals during my long marketing management career and had I cared for their mood my organization would have shown me the gate instead of those undisciplined people. Here I am talking about professional duties and not fighting with my reasonable members of the society. I was always known as very strict manager without a care who liked me and who did not. For me discipline and doing things properly were my priorities.

Of course, when it comes to Professional front, i agree with what you said. But even in your profession you have to work with a Team. You have to be either a member of the Team or the Team leader. If you are a member of the Team, and if your Team Leader acts against your beliefs, what you would do ? Do you convince him why and where he is wrong or bear the nonsense of your Leader. The same question I ask you even if you are the Team Leader.

 

My last answer in this thread

I will have a meeting with my team members before commencing and working on a project and set a plan (with plan B ready in case something goes wrong) Open to all suggestions even from the junior most members. All suggestions which are good for the project included in the plan. And the final point, if a team member tries to act smart, tell him properly but replace him immediately without giving him too many chances to sabotage  the entire project. It always worked for me.

All suggestions which are good for the project are taken into consideration. Good to whom ? Company's Aims and Objectives I suppose. OK. If they are not good for you and against your own beliefs and assertions ?

Assertiveness is an essential quality. One must say clearly what ge stands for and srick to his views. Assertiveness is not rigidity. One must be responsive to othersand be a good listners. But he must give his own opinion honestly without succumbing to pressure or any other influence.  In team work, it is collective judgment and opinion ofream leader that matters.  But even minority opinion must be stated fearlessly. We have seen in many judicial cases that the minority opinion of a judge as a member of the bench is recorded even though this is not implemented.
