Mangalore has become plastic free since December 1st with the authorities banning the use of plastic bags in all super markets and shops.If and when you forget a bag along with you , you can buy a jute bag which would cost Rs 5 for a small one Rs 15 for a medium sized one and Rs 30 for a large bag. If you are carrying plastic bags in public places you are fined by the police...One can already see the difference it has made to the cleanliness and general look of the city...

    According to reports within 6 months a plant will be erected in Pacchanady on the outskirts of Mangalore, wherein all the collected plastic will be converted to oil and exported...

    Every one must feel as a responsible to keep city clean with the help of government. In every city out skirts a plant must be constructed and try to produce electricity with the waste matter.

    GOOD. Some initiative. But it remains to be seen if the authorities can maintain the same grip in implementing all along. Because, i have seen in my place our civic authorities declared war on plastics some time ago and they failed miserably in implementing it fully.

    This rule is applicable in our area for long time but there is no value of it practically. Polythene bags are available openly which are only choking the drainage system drastically.

    GOOD. Some initiative. But it remains to be seen if the authorities can maintain the same grip in implementing all along. Because, i have seen in my place our civic authorities declared war on plastics some time ago and they failed miserably in implementing it fully.


    Of course that is to be seen...Mangalore has always been a clean city and people are very aware here and come together the moment there is need to correct things, like bad roads etc...Now we have concrete roads all over the city and even the smaller roads are being upgraded. So, I feel that plastic ban is here to stay since there have been a lot of debates with the public actively participating...

    That's good news and I hope soon other cities also implement these rules so that we can improve our environment to a great extent.

    Was it effective at least in the beginning and later became lax in implementation....I agree that plastic and polythene bags are choking the drains and messing up all the cities and people have to seriously think of taking stronger measures...
