In yester years, the people liked sports in much better way because love for a game clearly means playing that game. Now in the changed scenario, sports are associated with glamor as well commercial prospects with them.
Cricket is not the most popular game in the world but it is the most popular one in India. Extravaganzas created by this sport overshadow other sports like Hockey. Even if Hockey is the national game of India, it occupies a lower position on the popularity whereas cricket is at the zenith.
It is an adage that everyone worships rising sun. People associate themselves with the games and sports which bring honor for India. As far as Cricket is concerned, it has brought many accolades for our country. Who does not know about Tendulkar and Dhoni? But Hockey legends are not on the lips of many people.
In the age of Commercial and stiff, promoters look everything from business point of view. Promoter companies put their stakes only with those games which have roaring popularity.
The government also promotes the sports which have remarkable popularity among the public. Cricket has many remarkable virtues. Discipline of the players and hear-throbbing excitements throughout the game are the other qualities of cricket. Other sports-particularly in India does not have such spectators and promoters that cricket have.
One should not think blindly that cricket is solely responsible for decaying the popularity of other games. If one sport does not get adequate coverage, cricket should not be blamed and we need to correct immediately our present sports policies to improve the popularity of other games.
