The last week saw twin tragedies in sports of different nature in terms of results. First it was the turn of Soderling who lost successive French Open title encounter in Mens singles finals after having beaten the defending champion and world number one in both the editions. Soderling was simply outstanding over two books in both the editions of French Open.
Yesterday at Harare Sports Club, it was the turn of Zimbabwe who lost the tri series final to Sri Lanka. After having played outstanding cricket for two weeks it would have been really heart breaking for cricket fans and Zimbabwean fans in particular to see their team lose. I am sure many in India would have wanted Zambians to win considering the way they played in the tournament. Zimbabwe simply deserved to win the final if one were to look at their results in the league because they simply dominated the league brushing aside much more fancied teams Sri Lanka and India. One consolation for Zimbabwe is the fact that Taylor who was easily the best batsman in the tournament was named Man of the Series.
The bitter truth for Soderling and Zimbabwean team is the fact that it would be very difficult for them to repeat their outstanding performances in future. With Federer going great guns and Nadal too doing well it would be difficult for Soderling to make finals of Grand Slams on regular basis. Similarly Zimbabwe cannot expect to get a chance to play second strings teams more often.
Though Rafael Nadal won the French open and Sri Lanka won the tri series, Soderling's efforts in French Open and Zimbabwe's spectacular show in the tri series will be remembered for many years.
