Shane Watson a flamboyant batsman who can bat both in the middle and at the top and an impressive bowler is definitely one of Austrailia’s brightest prospects for the future. 10 half-centuries 4 centuries 99 wickets in 96 ODI’S and 8 half-centuries 1 century 27 wickets in 17 Tests(as on 18 January,2010 by Wikipedia cricket statistics) Australia’s selectors hope that he can fill the gap left by veterans like Adam Gilchrist, Mathew Hayden and Glenn McGrath.
Born on 17 June 1981 he debuted for Austrailian Cricket Team in 2002 in an ODI against South Africa .Having made his place in an ODI squad he remained on the fringes of the Test squad in his early years. Although he has now taken up the opening slot with Simon Katich but Watson will have improve his shot selection for the Test’s due to his attacking instincts. Sometimes he reaches the 90’s but remains unable to reach the three figure mark.
Watson has all-round ability a batsman a good fielder and a medium-pace bowler with great control over his line and length. His bowling proves to be more than handy in all forms of the game but Watson’s strength is clearly his batting. IPL’s Rajasthan Royals contracted Watson and he became their most lethal weapon guiding them to victory in the first season helping his team with bat and bowl.
Watson is and will always be a valuable member of any team he will become a part of giving the team’s captain an attacking batsman and a consistent bowler at his disposal. If Watson continues to improve his game one day he would definitely become the number one all-rounder in the world.
