Kolkata is the first Indian city which has underground railway system, called the metro. Now Delhi, too, has the metro. It is the only Indian city where trams are still in use.
The climate of Kolkata is neither very hot nor very cold. During the rain season there are heavy rains. Then weather becomes quite hot and damp.
Kolkata’s main industry is jute processing. Some other industries are textiles, footwear, vehicles, chemicals, electrical goods, iron and steel.
Kolkata has a number of tourist spots. Some of them are the Victoria memorial, the Birla planetarium, the fort William, the national library, the Ravindra sarovar, the botanical Gardens and the Alipur zoo.
Most people in Kolkata speak Bengali. They celebrate a number of festivals. But Durga Puja is the most popular. It is celebrated with great joy and devotion for ten days.
