Now-a-days we use and waste so much water in our day to day activities that we hardly think about the pros and cons it could have in the future. Gone are the days when our mother earth was blessed with plenty of water and our usage of water was also limited. As time passed we developed in every field and our usage or misuses of water also increased to such an extent that it is beyond ones imagination to map out how deep a scar we are leaving behind on this bounty of nature.
This reminds me of an old story which my granny used to say me when I was a kid. I could still remember her each and every word she used to tell me. She used to say that during the earlier times our great Bharatvarsha or India was ruled by kings or Maharajahs. She said that when she was very young one such king used to rule the place where she was living. The king was well known far and wide for his good and noble deeds and he used to take care of his pupil or prajas very well. One day when the king was lost in deep sleep, he dreamt of a fairy standing in front of him. The fairy said that she was very much impressed with the great deeds of the king in this world and she would love to give him something in return. The king was very pleased to hear that and as by nature he used to think about the welfare of his subject and he asked the fairy to give him something that could benefit the people of his kingdom. The fairy agreed on that and said that she would then give him and his people a natural wealth rather then riches and wealth as the kind had plenty of those. She said that there is a river passing through the village and she would bless the river with a divine power to cure the sick and the ailing. She said further that if anyone suffer from any illness will be cured after taking a sip from the river water. The king promised the fairy that he will take care of this gift and would do everything to protect it from any injury or harm. Then the fairy disappeared and the king was very happy to hear that.
Time passed on and for many years the villagers used to get cured from any sickness by just taking a sip from the holy river water and this continued for a long time. Thereafter, they were living a healthy and peaceful life and as a result they grew in number and the population increased. In the mean time there came up huge projects like factories, workshops, buildings and apartments. They continued to use the water from the river for all these activities and even went on dumping huge factory wastes and molasses into the river.
Suddenly with the passing of time the king was coming of age and one day he felt very sick and he went to the holy river to take a sip to get cured but the water could do no good to the king's health. The king got very angry and cursed the fairy for telling him the lie that the water will always act as a medicine for forever. Hearing this the fairy once again appeared in front of the king and said they she didn't lie to him and said that the king didn't keep his promise of protecting the river and therefore it lost its all magical power of curing. The king got very ashamed of the behavior of his people and said that they themselves are to be blamed for it.
So friends just see and imagine that there is a lesson for us also in this story. If we don't treat with care the gifts of nature then even the almighty God cannot help us and if we misuse them then somehow we are digging our own graves and we ourselves are to be blamed for it. So its high time for us to take care and act properly towards the gifts of nature, especially water being one of them, so that indirectly it will be a great help and boon for our in the future.
