On a hot sunny day you are asked to walk before on sand, would you like to do it? - Certainly not.
At the same time if you are asked to dip your feet into running water you would not mind, land absorbs heat much faster than water.
Take two bowls A and B. fill A with sand and B with water. Keep both the bowls out in the sun for the same time. Note the temperature. What do you notice? Sand gets hotter than water.
Now place both bowls in a room for some time. Note down the temperature of both the bowls. You will find that the temperature of sand is lower than water.
Sand gets heated faster than water. It also cools down faster.
You must have heard that coastal areas have pleasant weather throughout the year. Why is it so?
The rate at which land and water absorbs and lose heat plays an important role is in the coastal areas. During the day, the land gets heated faster than sea. The land gets heated faster than sea. This causes the air above the land to get hotter than the air above the sea. The air above the land, being hot, rise up and the cool air above the sea rushes into take its place, causing a cool breeze.
At night, the land cools down faster than the sea. The air above the sea is still hot and rise up. The cool air from the land blows towards the sea.
Hot air is lighter than clod air
Ventilators in a room are always near the ceiling. Windows are at a lower level. Exhaust fans are always put up at a higher level. Do you know why?
The air that we breathe out is hot. This hot air is light. It rises and goes out of the ventilator. Cool air enters through the windows. Cool, fresh air is heavy and enters the room through the widows.
It is for the same reason why the freezing chamber of a refrigerator is always at the top.
