The press has an important role to play in the society. It can shapepublic opinion and as such it has to be cautious is every way. In a democracy the press has to play a constructive role. Newspapers are the main source of information to people. They tell them what is going on around in the world. In this process they make their own remarks on men and matters. In doing so they have to be unbiased and impartial. The press should exercise great self restraint in reporting sensitive matters. It should write nothing that disturb peace. Newspapers should never support a wrong cause. Our Constitution guarantees freedom of press. A free press is the reflection of a free society. The main responsibility of the newspapers is to bring out facts and put them before the people. For this objectivity in reporting is necessary. The press should uphold certain positive values that create a healthy society. It should, through its comments, enable the public to form the right way of thinking. The press should not be afraid of opposing the wrong. In a democratic set up the press can act as a bridge between the government and the people. It can gather public opinion and bring it to the notice of the authorities. Similarly it can also let people know what the government thinks or does. Often in a democracy the newspapers champion the cause of the public. They are not afraid of criticizing the rules. This provides the governments an opportunity to correct their lapses. In India the press is using its freedom for constructive purposes. By and large the newspapers are impartial. They act in public interest. Many a hidden secret has been unearthed by the newspapers. Cases like the bofors-issue came to light only because of newspapers. Of late investigative journalism has gained momentum. Many shady activities of men in power are being brought to light. Unfortunately this freedom is sometimes misused. Some newspapers have vested interests. They spread rumours and present distorted version of things. This may rouse passions in the society. There are newspapers that spread communal hatred. In our country newspapers are owned by big businessmen. They project their own views in the newspapers which may have harmful effects. This tendency has to be checked. No newspaper should be allowed to write anything that effects the peace of society. Only then freedom of press has any meaning.
There is this guy who is fondly called as di(t)ch , not sure why he got this name but when people call him dich ,it just feels right. There is even a orkut fan group for this. The funny thing about nick names is , like in this case people start responding to it readily , so much so that they slowly forget their actual name.
Then there are universal nick names like mama, thayir etc.In any college you will find more than one responding to these.
Sometimes people are not all that good when nick-naming , for instance people who tend to do everything in easiest and most efficient way possible get names like vetti, which means jobless or one who avoids/escapes from doing tiny chores.Come on getting work done the easiest way is one of the six sigma management principles, No?
Eat correct

Ravi: `I wonder if mother will bring food today. We have not eaten for two whole days now.’’
Kavita: ``May be she will bring the roots that she got last time.’’
Ravi: ``Yuck! They were so bad. My stomach ached the whole day after eating them.’’
Kavita: ``At least that day it was not due to hunger’’.
Malnutrition
Many people in our country do not get even one proper meal in a day. They suffer from malnutrition, which causes many deficiency diseases such as rickets (weakening of bones), anemia and so on. Poverty and famine are the two major causes of malnutrition.
Poverty
Praveen is a seven years old boy. He belongs to a poor family. His father and mother are laborers in the paddy fields. For all their hard work they get paid very little. Praveen has three more siblings, one brother and two sisters. All of them are thin and weak because they often remain hungry for days.
Some children no chance! They have to eat whatever they get to survive. So next time you throw food, think of them! Never ever waste food. You are lucky enough to have it!
Nearly six million people starve in the world every day, hunger kills at least 12 million children every ear. Most of them suffer from malnutrition diseases.
Famine
Famine is a situation when people do not get food to eat. It happens due to natural causes like drought (acute water shortage) or floods or damage to crops by pests or diseases. Famine leads to malnutrition and starvation which in turn leads to death. Famines are also caused by man-made reasons such as wars or misused of crops. Sometimes, food grains stored in godowns get spoilt due to pest attacks. Food may also get spoilt due to its careless handling during transportation.
Bengal famine -1943
Shortage of food leads to a rise in the prices of food an example of this people is the Bengal famine of 1943. Bengal famine did not occur because of lack of food. Rather, it was a man –made calamity. During World War II, the British burnt the rice fields in Bengal to stop the Japanese from entering ndia from the east. They did not allow rice- carrying ships from Burma to reach our country nor did they allow the fishermen to fish in the rivers, scarcity of food grains led to an increase in the price of food beyond the reach of common people. ``Between’’ 1.5 to 3 million people died from starvation and malnutrition during the Bengal famine.
The people of Bihar from suffered hunger and malnutrition due to the kosi floods of August 2008.
Australia is facing a drought since 2002, resulting in global shortage of rice.
A burning problem in the present day world is population explosion. Every nation is facing many problems because of growing population. To keep this problem under control family planning is to be adopted.
India is one the countries where population is increasing alarmingly. Because of this , poverty has increased. Unemployment is the order of the day. It is no exaggeration to say that population growth is the root cause of all evils. The only solution to all this is keeping the country’s population under control. Only then the nation prospers.
Prior to independence not much thought was given to family planning. People though that children were god given gift and man had no right to deny what god gave him. Large families were considered to be strong in all respects. But slowly this notion changed. As time passed the needs of people increased. Parents found it difficult to provide what their children wanted. They began to realize the need for a small family. Thus the concept of family planning gained ground.
The government began educating people in this regard. A large scale campaign is conducted advocating family planning. Family planning can be undertaken in two different ways. There are natural methods and artificial ones too. Young couples should practice either of these. It is not easy to practice natural ways of family planning have to be followed.
Several ways of family planning are available to people. They can use contraceptive devices like the loop and the condom. Oral tablets are also available. There are several other methods suggested by doctors. People can select any of these methods with the doctor’s advice. The government is conducting special medical camps to educate people in this regard.
People should be prepared to limit the number of children to one or two. Sterilization methods have to be adopted. Men can undergo vasectomy and women, tubectomy. Those who undergo these are given incentives. Employees are also doing their best to propagatie the need for family planning.
Family planning is the need of the hour. In India population is bursting at the seams. We are experiencing the social and economic evils associated with it. It is high time all of us realized the importance of a small family. The nation’s progress depends on the success of this programme.
