Would we really, for instance, likLifee to know exactly what other people think of us (directly I mean, using telepathy, rather than inferring it from what they say or how they behave towards us)?
Would we like to be instantly informed of every death that occurs and the grief that each death causes? Of every instance of pain or suffering?
In reality we are only directly aware of events that impinge on our senses, and we are able to select, to some extent, which events we wish to be informed about (for instance, by reading or not reading a newspaper) and are not directly aware of the thoughts and feelings of others. I suspect this is a good thing for us, despite the fact it means we are essentially isolated from other minds and little different to the philosopher's handy metaphor "a brain in a vat".
