HOW TO ESCAPE FROM DISASTERS
Earth quake:
1. Prior warning about earthquake is not possible.
2. Teach your family how to switch off electrical connections and cooking gas stoves immediately.
3. During an earth quake, go under the table, kneel on the floor to protect yourself.
4. Go near a sturdy wall, sit on the floor and hold on the floor to protect yourself.
5. Retrofit the house to protect from earthquake.
6. Go outdoors if the house is not concrete.
7. Find a clear spot away from trees power lines and telephone lines.
8. If you are near a car, do not go near buildings, trees etc.
9. Use only torchlights, avoid using candles and oil lamps as there is fire risks during earth quakes.
10. Wear a pair of shoes or sandals to walk on the rubble or debris.
Land slide:
1. land slides can strike quickly and without warning.
2. The sliding rocks, stones and mud can destroy life and property.
3. If you are built in soil slide prone area, prepare an alternative path for sliding soil to deviate.
4. The warning signals of land slides are:
The doors and windows become tight.Cracks occur on the roofs of houses, walls, floor and build stuctures like roads.
5. Chances are that there will be closture of roads by mudside , therefore keep in mind two or three alternate roots planned to escape quickly.
6. If at home when hte land slide occurs then do not come out of the house.
7. Take cover under table, cot or sturdy furniture
8. When there is no escape and you are trapped in a landslide ,kneel or sit close and place your hands at the back of your neck.
9. Look out people trapped inside and give first aid for serious injuries.
Drought:
1. planned land use development through alternate cropping and drip irrigation.
2. Proper storage and use of rain water.
3. Arrangment for cattle fodder and drinking water in drought regions.
4. Drought relief planning at the village level.
5. Stucturing hazard and risk managment servicegroups and functin effctively in each village.
6. efficient use of land and water.
7. Develop the forests and prevent drought.
8. Rain water harvesting to be done in all buildings.
cyclone/ storm:
1. Venturing to the sea is dangerous during the cyclone.
2. Likewise, aviod going out of the house unless there is an emergency.
3. keep valuable in a safe place.
4. Insure the house and domestic materials.
5. Secure the cattle, drinking water and fodder in a safe place.
6. Listen to the local radio /tv for instructions
7. Once cyclone warning is given, take dry food , drinking water etc.
8. Remove or transfer to a safe place the higing board, curved iron or other sharp materials.
9. Strong winds may break the windows and doors, so bolt them tightly.
10.Head for cyclone shelters or any other safe place immediately.
Fire:
1. call nearby police station or fire services immediately as soon as the fire breaks out.
2. You should know the location of the water buckets, water, sand and long bamboo stick
3. If you are caught in fire or smoke, escape by crawling on the floor.
4. If your clothes are on fire "do not run stop drop roll on the floor.
5. Do not throw the burning cigaratte without extinguishing it.
6. do not allow children to light the matches or lighters.
7. After cooking ensure that hte fire is extinguished.
9. Do not keep any inflammable article like kerosene, straw or dry timber near the stove
10. Do not forget to turn off the gas stove when not in use.
11. Avoid wearing synthetic clothe while cooking.
