Param Vir Chakra – It is the highest gallantry award for the officers and other enlisted personnel of all military branches of India. It recognizes the highest degree of valour in the presence of the enemy on land, at sea or in the air. The medal is made of bronze. It was introduced on January 26, 1950. it can also be awarded posthumously.
Param Vir Chakra is the equivalent award of the Medal of Honour in the USA, and the Victoria Cross in the UK.
Maha Vir chakra- It is the second highest gallantry award for acts of conspicuous gallantry in the presence of the enemy on land, at sea or in the air. It is made of silver.
Vir Chakra- It is awarded for the acts of gallantry in the face of the enemy on land, in the air or at sea. It is made of silver too.
Ashok Chakra- This is awarded to civilians for the bravery or an act of daring or self sacrifice other than in the face of enemy. It is made of gold gilt. These awards are biannual and are given on the Republic Day and Independence Day.
Kirti Chakra- It is awarded for conspicuous gallantry other than in the face of enemy. It is made of silver.
Shaurya Chakra- It is awarded for gallantry other than in the face of the enemy. It may be granted to civilians or military personnel. It is made of bronze and can be awarded posthumously.
