Things do not always turn out the way you would like them to. The result is disappointment. This in turn can lead to anger, resentment, sorrow or depression. If your disappointment is caused by someone else’s action or a broken promise, you are hurt and resentful. If the disappointment is due to your own failure to achieve something, you may feel ashamed or even worthless. You may even being to ask yourself, `Am I good enough?’
For instance, you may not win a match. It is perfectly natural to feel disappointed. It happens to everyone at sometime or the other. But we can all learn to deal with disappointments wisely and prevent them from making us think negatively.
There are two types of people in this world-those who overcome and master their disappointments and those who all their disappointments to overcome and master them. Wouldn’t you rather be master than the slave?
Stage fight
Veena loved to sing. She had a sweet voice and good ear for music. When the X class singing competition was announced, she asked her mother to teach her a new song. Veena loved the song that her mother taught her and she practiced it every day.
On the day of the competition, Veena was nervous. Her mother wished her the best of luck as she waved goodbye at the door.
The competition began. When Veena’s name was called, she had an attack of stage fright. Her throat seemed to choke and she could not sing at all. She left the stage in tears.
On her way home, Veena felt really miserable. `How can I tell mother what happened?’ she thought. `She spent so much of her time training me, and I have let her down. She will be angry and upset with me’.
What do you think Veena’s mother said to daughter?
Perhaps she told her about this incident from Mahatma Gandhi’s life that not many people know about.
Gandhi had forgotten every question he was going to ask! Even the judge laughed as Gandhi sat down.
It was the same Gandhi who later defends many Indians in court cases in South Africa. He inspired a whole nation to rise in a freedom movement, and came to be known as a `Mahatma.
