There were more conductors than passengers in the bus and most of them armed with whistle, the exact prototypes of the conductor’s own whistles:-
It was not a `university special’ but the students made it so, and the conductor was helpless.
Most of them had stampeded the bus onward to Amir pet Bus Terminus with a views to get backwards to Connaught place and beyond in the same bus.
Whether they had passes or whole –day tickets for this double journey, one never knew. The conductor thought it wise not to bother.
It was metro bus route no 01. Time 3.15PM when students are flooding out of their classes and colleges to center cafes, caves and cinema houses.
The students were in good humor because the conductor and the driver were not in bad humor.
It seemed to be a daily occurrence and the metro bus staff well-acquainted with the pranks of these new-generation youngsters.
It was an express bus for the general public but it was practically high jacked by a merry crowd of students.
So many students by a merry crowd of students.
So many students were blowing their whistles all the way for, sheer fun of it that the conductor thought it wise to conserve lung power.
To be forewarned is to be forearmed. He knew what is what.
The driver stopped the bus wherever he found the students standing on the roadside, irrespective of the prescribed bus stops, and allowed them in.
He ignored the proper bus stops where poor passengers were waiting for hours.
The students cracked merry jokes, calling it a `ladies special.’ And indeed it was, with most of the boys in colorful flowery clothes!
Ladies in the bus were gallantly offered seats. There was no eve-teasing.
There were eight non-student passengers in the bus; and I was one of them.
Although the bus was packed like a tin of sardines, the leader was occupying two seats near the entrance. Nobody dared disturb him.
The leader gracefully offered me a seat; and when I vacated it at Shansi house, three students slumped in my place.
If he students wanted to convert one man in Hyderabad they were successful.
They converted me.
