Being the first book in the Shopaholic Series, this book is an absolute delight for all those readers who like to browse through chick-lit. It has also been published under a different name, The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic.
Rebecca or Becky, as she is more popularly known in the story, appears to live a life of extravagance. And she is like any other woman on the planet... she loves to shop! So much so that she is a 'Shopaholic' and ends up crediting more amount to her cards than she can really afford to pay.
Her job isn't great, her credit card limits have reached the maximum and the bank manager is almost threatening her to pay up. The fun begins with Becky trying her best to avoid paying her bills, pretending to be sick, to be someone else and even trying to pass off the bank manager as her 'stalker'... all the while indulging in shopping.
This book captures the real shopper's dilemma (more so of a woman's) in attempting to avoid buying excessively and failing miserably at it. It is a complete entertainment filled book that makes you want to laugh at some of the silly schemes that Becky comes up with in an attempt to get out of all the trouble she manages to get into so smoothly. Of course, chances are if you aren't much of a shopper yourself, you might find the book simply dragging on with not much to gather from.
The book has been widely acclaimed, having been adapted into a movie in 2009 with Isla Fisher playing the role of Becky. However there are several differences between the novel and the film adaptation.
