INTRODUCTION:
AIDS was first discovered in 1981. AIDS is caused due to a virus called HIV-Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It damages the white blood cells which protects the body from disease and hence makes the body to become a prey to a wide range of disease causing microbes.HIV is communicated to other people by sexual contact,blood transfusion,from infected mother to child through breast feeding and unclean and used needles.
HIV-Human Immunodeficiency Virus:
HIV is of group-VI (ssRNA-RT),family Retroviridae, genus Lentivirus. HIV is of two types. They are HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is common among individuals which has a greater risk of developing AIDS virus. HIV-2 is caused due to a strand of viruses called SIV (Simian Immunodeficiency Virus).HIV viruses multiply slowly but its presence can be seen only after 10 to 15 years.
AIDS SYMPTOMS:
AIDS can be found out by some symptoms. They are:
- Fever
- Enlarged lymph glands
- Persistent diarrhea
- Severe weight loss
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Depression
- Anorexia
- Social withdrawals
- Forgetfulness
One the other hand we should know that AIDS is not caused by any physical contact with the affected person.
MEDICINES FOR AIDS:
There are some effective medicines to control the infection. They are:
- Reverse transcriptase (RT) inhibitors
- Protease inhibitors
- Fusion inhibitors
TEST DONE TO DETECT AIDS VIRUS:
There are some tests to find out HIV. They are:
- Elisa test
- Western Blot test
- Latex agglutination test
- PCR test
STATISTICS ABOUT AIDS:
- In 1996, 28 million people were infected by HIV virus.
- In 2005, 2.4 to 3.3 million people were infected by AIDS.
- In 2008, 2 million people died of AIDS.
- From 1981 to 2006, about 25 million people died of AIDS.
- At present nearly 40 million people in the world are affected by AIDS virus.
CONCLUSION:
We should not treat them as patients but as persons one among us.
