Once a clerk goes late to office. His boss asks the reason for being late; he replies that alarm did not rung. On this boss asks surprisingly “You sleep at home also”.
Just like the clerk from the above joke, many Indians are facing same problem related to sleep.
According to survey done by Nilsen, 93% of Indians are facing some sleep related disease. Nilsen took this conclusion form 5,600 people in the range of 35-65 years of age, from 25 cities.
But the thing which surprises is that these people didn’t knew that the problem faced by them are related to their incomplete sleep. Many people don’t even know that incomplete sleep can lead to some health related problem.
Dr. Anup Mishra from Fortis hospital, Delhi, says “Problems arising due to incomplete sleep are common, but then too people ignore it. When they feel that condition has become severe, and working becomes impossible, they run towards doctors. Incomplete sleep give rise to Diabetes, Hyper tension, Heart related disease, Heart attack. Only 2 percent people give the reason of incomplete sleep for their problems.”
As the effect of incomplete sleep, a person cannot control his sleep during office hours, and to avoid this he take some light lunch, sometimes just a fruit or a sandwich; But according to Dr. Bhattacharya this effects in stress. Incomplete sleep leads to stress where as eating less leads to loss in energy, which in turns leads to uncontrolled sleep. The increase in road accidents is due to incomplete sleep of driver.
Incomplete sleep not only affects the health but also the work. Loss of concentration, loss of attention, not able to understand, forgetting simple things, and growing disinterest are affects of incomplete sleep, which leads to frequent mistakes.
Students of 12 to 18 years also face same problems related to incomplete sleep. The study shows the reason for this; their day starts at 6 in the morning, which ends at 12 in night. In their busy schedule which includes classes and school hours, hobbies, homework, watching T.V. playing computer games they don’t get 8 hours to sleep.
In metros, men and women have to travel around 1 to 2 hour towards there working place and again same time to return home. During this journey they are faced with huge traffic jams and pollutions, which again lead to extra stress and loss of energy. Many times this leads to sleep during driving. Many people due to the stress caused, go to bed before having their dinner or having just little dinner. This is increasing in people of 25 to 45 age group. Dr. S. K. Rajan of Bombay Hospital says that 40 percent of patient that comes to him are due to problem of incomplete sleep.
