The diet in naturopathy is of great importance, because its most of the treatment consists of cleansing the system through diet. Consuming cooked food as our diet is an old tradition formed by our ancestors thousands of years ago and it is being continued by us even today. The main ingredients of foods essential for the nutrition of the body are proteins, Carbohydrates, Fats, Minerals and Vitamins.
With a view to make one’s life happy and healthy, one’s daily diet should normally consist of the following ingredients.
Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are the main energy source for the human body. Carbohydrates include sugar and starch. Tubers, roots, pulses, milk, cereals, etc. are the main sources of carbohydrates. This constituent of food is available from all kinds of food grains, polished rice, flour devoid of husk, white sugar etc.
Fats: Fat provides heat and energy to the body. Milk, ghee, meat, vegetables fats are the main source of fats. This invites diseases like high blood pressure, heat-attack, hypertension etc.
Proteins: any of the group of highly complex organic compounds found in all living cells and comprising the most abundant class of all biological molecules. Proteins are very important for diet as they are necessary for the growth, development, regeneration of our body. The main sources of proteins are milk, eggs, meat, pulses etc. Twenty-two types of amino acids contain proteins. Some of the amino acids are produced in the body.
Vitamins: These are a small but necessary part of diet. A vitamin is an organic compound required as a nutrient in tiny amounts by an organism. Vitamins are substances that your body needs to grow and develop normally. There are 13 vitamins your body needs. They are vitamins A, C, D, E, K and the B vitamins etc.
Vitamins are organic chemical substances required in quantity for the process of metabolism in the body.
Minerals: A mineral is a solid inorganic element or compound occurring in nature. They are essential for maintaining optimal health. A mineral is a naturally occurring solid chemical substance that is formed through geological processes and that has a characteristic chemical composition, a highly ordered atomic structure, and specific physical properties.
Minerals play a very important role in the complex processes going on in the body. About 20 to 30 gm of mineral salts are excreted daily from the body though urine. This must be replaced daily through our diets.
