I want to share with you a brief review of a book which I liked very much. I found it to be very valuable and handy for those who want to make it big in the field of writing. The name of the book is “Writing with Style” and it is authored by “Sue Young”. It is a guide which was first published in August 2002, by Scholastic Incorporation Pvt. Ltd. The book is tremendously helpful for beginners who want to improve their writing skills. Expert writers can also use it as a easy reference.
The book has four main chapters. They are: Planning your work, Producing your work, Polishing your work and Presenting your work.
Planning your work
Planning, as we all know, is an important aspect when for producing any work. This chapter of the book lays emphasis on the need of planning the content of your work. It describes, in detail, how to put your thoughts and ideas together before you start writing.
Producing your work
This chapter starts with the “sentence” as it is the basis of any written work, and delves into the various aspects which define the content of your work like headings, paragraphs, punctuation, style etc. This basically explains how to draft your essay or article.
Polishing your work
Polishing or fine-tuning your work mainly involves making your work grammatically correct. The chapter deals with proper grammar and punctuation along with clarity and brevity. A easy grammar reference is given to refresh your grammar skills and the words which are often confused are clearly distinguished and explained.
Presenting your work
This last chapter deals with presenting your finished work to the public. It tells how to title your writing piece and touches on other important aspects like formatting, spacing, numbering and adding bibliographies to your written work.
The content of the book is well-organised and the language is simple and lucid. Overall, it is a book which I highly recommend for casual as well as serious writers. The punch line of the book is “Making your Writing Stand Out” and it, no doubt, does exactly that.
