In ancient India, during the Vedic Age, women were given education in the same way as men. It was during the Muslim period that women began to keep "strict purdha". Neither were there proper arrangements, not did the parents dare to send their daughters out to receive education. During the freedom struggle, it was realised by our leaders specially Gandhiji that without active participation of women in the freedom movement, India would never become free. Since then the necessity of educating women has been increasingly felt.
Women play an important role in development of the country. If we want to make democracy successful, women must be educated as they are the builders of happy homes. It is in their lap that the children receive their first lesson. In a nut - shell, the progress of a country depends upon female education. We must give up our conservative outlook. The need for female education was never felt so great as it is to-day.
All of us now accept the necessity of giving education to women, but there are differences in opinion. Some feel that women should be given a different kind of education from the one given to men as women have to discharge their duties as good housewives too. Another question is whether there should be co-education or not? Opinions differ widely on this issue. There are men who strongly advocate co-education at all stages. On the other extreme are those who are dead against it. But the truth lies in between these two extremes. We should take full advantage of co-education as well as safeguard ourselves against its evil effects. This will be the best policy for giving education to women.
The theory that women are inferior to men physically, mentally and morally, has been proved wrong. The deeds of bravery, courage and valour of Maharani Laskhmi Bai of Jhansi make the bravest of brave, bow their heads before her name. Every Indian takes pride in Mrs. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, Amrit Kaur and Sarojini Naidu. Their sacrifices and their outstanding services to the motherland are a source of inspiration to all. In recent times, late Mrs. Indira Gandhi has impressed all by her courage and determination. As a leader, she has acquired an international status.
Indeed, society runs on two wheels. Both the wheels must be equally strong to run it smoothly. Our constitution has, therefore given equal status to men and women. Women are being educated in increasing numbers. Let all of us give up our fears of prejudices against female eduaction. All the impediments must be removed from the way of their education. Let no girl remain without it. IT IS HER BIRTH - RIGHT.
