The onus lies on the parents first. People should voluntarily take part in the eradication of Junk food. Only then, any scheme will be successful.

But junk foods are so tasty and inviting. Now you will advise against eating them.

If people are drawn towards the taste of the junk food, they have to taste the bitter medicines when they are confined to a hospital bed.

One can always take samosas, burgers, sandwiches but in moderation w/o reaching hospital. Excess of good food will also take one to hospital bed. control is needed.[/quote

That's an apt point. But what I said was it's the people especially parents and the government should work in tandem to make it successful.

But today's double income parents are themselves hooked to junk food!!

That's altogether is a different issue. With the move of Maneka, the wisdom doors of such people are expected to open.

I have my doubts but yes it should be tried, but not by banning junk food because definition of junk food is difficult.

Let's not bother about the definition of Junk food. We have to see the bad effects of Junk food, which has been widely recognized as a health hazard world over.

Health hazard for those who give up cooking at home and convert junk food into main food, that is why I said earlier double income parents are patronsing junk joints frequently. Definition because they try to ban foreign junk and desi junk will be permitted.

Are you sure Desi Junk alone will be permitted ? What's the basis of your conclusion?

While we all do know what junk food is, there still need to be a clear definition for junk food, as you rightly said that now when one says junk food, people get images of only places like McDonald's, KFC etc. but desi junk such as samosas, vadas etc. is also more rampant. But at the same time, there also needs to be special mandate to make healthy nutritious food more affordable to people. While people with double incomes find it fashionable to visit multinational food joints and pizza places, poor people have to sustain themselves by eating on various roadside taparis! In Maharashtra, thanks to Sharad Pawar's efforts to make the state one big winery, Jowar, the poor man's staple grain has become too expensive for them to be able to buy it daily, so most working class labourers have to satiate their hunger eating vada-pavs. So the problem is much more extensive than simply banning few chains of eateries!

As of now there is no classification of food has been done. Nor defined. A measure was contemplated to create an atmosphere to groom a healthy citizen right from the school days.

That is the point I was making, which you have illustrated very effectively. Junk generally means foreign junk foods like KFC etc. Where ever Sharad Pawar took interest those items have always become costly and benefited only a handful. He was an over rated Minister but shrewd to last so long with handful MP's. government should spend money on creating awareness rather trhan selective banning. In 1977 foreign Coca Cola was banned but Indian Colas were permitted.

Junk food is defined as, a food with low nutritional value often high in fat , sugar ,salt and calories be it foreign or Desi..

But for many, desi junk is better than foreign junk food like desi super market retailers are not harming local kiryana shops but foreign retail super markets do. It is this attitude under discussion.

As far as quality of junk food is concerned Deep fried Samosas are as harmful as Kentucky fried chicken.
